PowerEdge VRTX with R1-2401 VRTX 1Gb Switch Module - cannot connect port gi1/1

I don't know if this is a server or network issue, but I post here anyway..

Trying to set up a Dell PowerEdge VRTX with a R1-2401 VRTX 1Gb Switch Module. But port gi1/1 insists that is in a down/down state. The OS also says not connected. What I am doing wrong? All other ports are connected fine.

This is a M620 server, if that helps at all.

How to upgrade Lifecycle Controller with no OS

Trying to upgrade the Lifecycle Controller software on an R320 with no OS installed.  Only options I can find for download are DUPs for Win and Linux.  How would I go about updating the LCC with no OS installed?  Have LCC version 1.4.0.128 and trying to go to 1.4.2.12.

Disabling management shared NIC (BMC) on PowerEdge T410

Hi, first I would like to thank everyone in advance.

I have PowerEdge T410 (11G, BMC only - no IDRAC card), and this server will be moved to some "unfriendly" network, with big risk of some remote access exploitation, but with absolutely no need for remote administration. Therefore I'd like to completely disable BMC management NIC functionality. So far i managed to disable IPMI in BMC setup utility (CTRL+E) and SOL (Serial-Over-Lan) with OMSA. And I'd like to know some best practises for this situation.

In the T410 HW Owner's Manual there is some mention on page 47, where system message "MANAGEMENT SHARED NIC=<DISABLED | ENABLED>" is mentioned. It says management shared NIC can be enabled/disabled by some "System Management software", so this might be some way to go, but i don't know which exactly utility to use.

So finally the question is: What utility to use for disabling management shared NIC for integrated NICs, while keeping its normal usability by OS?

Sorry for long introduction, thank you very much, Jakkie.

Hello!

I have 4GB module (dual rank) = 16G:

2 module Dual Rank SAMSUNG Memory, 2 module Dual Rank HYNIX Memory.

Can I install this memory to socket PowerEdge T20?

PowerEdge T20 support dual rank 4 GB (1 module(s) 4 GB) DDR3, unbuffered, ECC, 1,600 MHz, DIMM, dual rank?

If support, how install 4 module on socket schema?

Thank you.

p.s. sorry for my bad english.

P.S. I relocated this question from a answered question to make eased to work with.

dell R720 issue

Hi can you help please to my customer with this issue? The servers we use have 4 NIC's 2 X 1Gig 2 X 10Gig Unlike any other hw we had in the past, the Linux detects the ports as follow - eth0 = 10G #1 eth1 = 10G #2 eth2 = 1G #3 eth3 = 1G #4 On another HW it is detected as follow - eth0 = 1G #3 eth1 = 1G #4 eth2= 10G #1 eth3 = 10G #2 This fact ( 10 G before 1G ) complicates the installation, please check with dell if it’s possible to change the order of the Nics. Anther example - In the Idrac we see - NIC.Integrated.1-1-1 Ethernet = C8:1F:66:ED:02:35

RAM upgrade for PowerEdge T410 - What works?

$

We have a from-the-factory configured Dell PowerEdge t410 server purchased in 07/2011 which we would like to now upgrade to 48GB RAM at the least cost possible as we are a non-profit trying to stretch our dollars.  It currently has 24GB installed (six DDR3 1333MHz registered dual rank 4GB RDIMMs installed in slots A1-A3 and B1-B3 (optimizer mode).  The machine has two Intel Xeon E5630 processors.  According to OMSA the BIOS is version 1.6.3 released 02/01/2011.  The server runs Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise and is the host system to 3 Hyper-V machines also running Server 2008.  All has gone well, but we are seeing the need to allocate more memory to the VMs and it isn't there, thus the need to upgrade.

I'm no hardware/server guru, but have done a little research and was hoping that we could purchase and install either 2 8GB sticks (add to empty slots) to take the system to 40GB; or buy 4 8GB sticks (& remove 2 4GB sticks) to take the system to 48GB.  If we could afford it, the latter would be preferred.  Here's the RAM I was looking to purchase:  http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=A6996808&baynote_bnrank=0&baynote_irrank=0&~ck=baynoteSearch

My problem is that I am very confused by the diagrams, and the 'rules' I've read in the manual as to what will work.  I've also read some forums indicating that I may need to upgrade BIOS.

So, do I need to upgrade BIOS?

Can I purchase the memory above (hopefully 4 modules) and install them for a 48GB working system?  If so, how do I configure module placement?  I was thinking 4GB sticks in slots 4 & 1 (both A & B making 8GB channels); and 8GB sticks in slots 2 & 3 (both A & B - single channel slots so each their own channel with 8GB each) or is this wrong?

Your help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Optimal memory config

I added some more memory  to a couple R710s and both are displaying at boot that they have a non-optimal configuration, although they still run.  Below is my current config, is there a way to use these chips so both boxes get 128GB?  If I need to buy more/different chips let me know.  I thought I was following the R710 memory configuration guides properly, but apparently not.

I have PowerEdge R910 with two memory riser cards and 4x4GB mem modules.

I tried to replace 4x4GB with 4x16GB memory modules (16GB 1333MHz Reg ECC Low Voltage Module ) and during POST system halt with message

NON CONFIGURABLE MEMORY DETECTED

SYSTEM HALTED

BIOS is updated on the last revision.

Is there any explanation?

Is 4x16GB supported on the R910 server?

We have a Blade Chassis PowerEdge M1000e with 10 blades in it. We are only using 8 blades and two of them are power off. is it safe to pull them out of the chassis?

We want to add memory onto the blade. Can we just pull the power off blade out, add the memory and then bring the blade back up? Hope that we will see the memory

thanks

Can a Poweredge R410 with cabled drives be upgrade to support hot-swap by adding the hot-swap backplane and a H200 Controller?

$

I am purchasing a used R410 for home use, and believe it is of the cabled hard drive configuration, and not hot-plug/swap.   While this is not a HUGE concern, hot-swap is nicer.   Looking at the chassis pictures (and the system maintenance manual, i can't seem to tell if it is possible to convert the cabled configuration to hotswap.   Is it possible to do this, assuming I purchase the backplane, hard drive trays, and a H200 controller?

Thanks!

R200 Unable to boot to OS

Hello. I'm guessing that this string has long been closed out, but it is so close to my issue that I'd like to see if I can reincarnate it; and I hope perhaps you can help me too! Please do tell me where to post this if I've got it in the wrong location.

First, my issue is with an R200 Server so that's a little different. Following a power outage the system was not coming up. A clean boot ended with an error indicating that the Dell SAS 6 Host Bus Adapter controller was bad: 'ERROR! Adapter Malfunctioning!' Fortunately, I had another system and swapped out the controller and then had to go through a similar process you already described here. The message now read:

Integrated RAID exception detected: Volume (00:130) is currently in state INACTIVE/DEGRADED. I was able to address this by going into the configuration (ctl>c) and activating the mirror. Once I did that it seemed a step closer. I believe that one of the disks was detected as missing but on bootup, I now see this message incicating that it now sees the drives: (Sorry, the editing in this box isn't working well...)

HBA ID LUN VENDOR Product Revision Capacity

1 0 0 ATA ST3250310NS NA08 232 GB

1 0 Dell Virtual Disk 1028           232 GB

LSILogic SAS1068E-IR 0.20.48.00 NV 28:06

And now, unfortuantely, I think windows tries to load, but I eventually end with this message: 'Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM. You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.'

I have tried loading the windows setup disk to perform this operation, but when I select 'r' it tells me that it cannot find a hard disk.

Here are my questions not necessarily in this order: 1) Do you have any advice for me at this point? 2) Is it possible that I do have a missing drive in the system and need to replace it prior for the OS repair to work?

Thanks!
