R710 Unresponsive
I have a PE R710 that started off with an iDRAC communications issue. We have iDRAC enterprise. I restarted the server and it said it could not communicate. I removed and reseated the module, it began working. Rebooted again and same issue. Removed and reseated and now it doesn't communicate at all. I have factory defaulted the server. Drained it of all power. Turned it back on and now the front LCD does not work and the fans run at 100%. I have left the server on for 5 minutes with no change. The server is getting power, when I press the power button the power light on the button goes green but the screen to the right shows nothing. I took the iDRAC module out and got the same results. I put the iDRAC module back in and connected to it and ran a ping. The default IP of 192.168.0.120 returns nothing. I waited 5 minutes again to ensure there was plenty of time for the module to initialize. I have verified that doing this does work on functioning systems. This system is out of warranty now, we do not plan on renewing. At this point I just want to know what happened. As we have many of these systems in production it is almost a need to know.
R720/620 DIMM slots and performance gain
Hi,
Just looking for best practice on DIMM placement on R720/620.
I've seen white paper - example of best data transfer rate you gain when placing 12 DIMM slots out of 24 full slots.
I'm planning to use all 24 slots, filled up with 16GB sticks and wondering what sort of performance I will get out of this configuration.
As 32GB sticks are more than double the price of 16GB so just looking to get the best scalability as well as the performance.
What are the configuration examples of getting a total of 384GB RAM?
PowerEdge M610 - iDRAC - Hardware Inventory Empty
Hi all,
I have a PowerEdge M610 working and powered on and when in iDRAC Web GUI under System>Properties>System Inventory, I see the message "Hardware Inventory is unavailable. Try again at a later time."
I have tried going into the iDRAC6 Configuration Utility (Ctrl E during BIOS Post) and enabling "Collect System Inventory on reboot", saving then rebooting the server, but still nothing in the Hardware Inventory.
Anyone seen this before and know how to get the Inventory populated with information?
Cheers.
PE 1800 3rd Party Power Supply Replacement??
I have a PowerEdge 1800 server that was given to our office by a customer after the system failed and would not power on. I diagnosed the issue as a failed power supply. However the customer who was unwilling to pay $500+ for one from a 3rd party vendor went with using a PC with raid to satisfy there needs thus giving our company the server.
The business here would LOVE to get the server functioning and using it for an excellent file server or small webhosting server so we purchased a 3rd party Antec TP-650 power supply that matches the same wattage and connectors that the originial psu had. But when I plugged the psu in (all PCI cards removed, 2 cpu's installed, all drives disconnected) the front light began flashing repeatedly blue as well as the rear system information light also blinked blue. I noticed a green LED on the motherboard was flashing in sequence with the blue lights as well.
When having the rear CPU / CASE fan plugged in I noticed that I could hear slight 'pulses' in the rotation of the fan while the front case fan, simply did not move. This type of hearing the rear CPU/CASE fan pulse with a slight spin up, spin down very repeatedly made me wonder if the power supply I bought new was failing. When connecting my voltmeter into a 4 pin Molex connector I was reading 4.5v & 9.2v when I should have been getting 5.0v and 12.0v respectively. After that I tried the antec PSU on a Vostro PC and it worked beautifuly giving the full 5.0 and 12.0 outputs.
I have swapped surge strips, power cables, and tried different outlets to no avail. Can someone tell me if it's possible for a PE 1800 to support a 3rd party PSU? Is it possible certain pins inside the 24+4 pin PSU cable are different on the Antec than on the originial OEM psu?? Or should I assume the motherboard is toast at this point??
I greatly appreciate ANY assistance here.
Thanks!!

Packet Loss on PowerEdge R720 with Broadcom 5720
Dimms in dell poweredge t20
What kind of graphics card can I put in Poweredge T110 II?
Server has following slots:
4 PCIe G2 slots:
Two x8 slots (one with x16 connectors)
One x4 slot (with x8 connector)
One x1 slot
Graphics card needs to support Windows server 2012 (are Windows 8 drivers compatible with Windows Server 2012?). I am not looking for anything fancy or fast, just something that can support 2 monitors via DVI or DisplayPort.
I looked at NewEgg graphics card section and find it difficult to understand what kind of interface I should pick. This is what NewEgg has for interface (I don't see any x8 or x4 as mentioned in Poweredge T110 II specs):
PCI Express 3.0 x16
PCI Express 2.1 x16
PCI Express 2.0 x16
PCI Express x16
PCI Express x1
PCI Express 2.0
PCI Express 2.1
PCI Express 3.0
IOMINF-1 driver for PowerEdge VRTX and PowerEdge M520
I am going to upgrade my firmware for my PowerEdge VRTX and I am thinking of upgrading:
MainBoard from 1.36.A00 to 1.41
CMC from 1.31 to 1.35
Perc H310 Mini Raid Controller from 20.12.0-0004 to 20.13.0-0007
I currently have something called IOMINF-1 11.0.0.0 but I cant find firmware updates for this. What is this?
iDrac6 Firmware update operation is already in progress
I Have a Dell R610. My iDRAC is not works (is not pinging iDRAC IP address)
I don't know how much time my iDrac is not working, Did i try to upgrade BIOS, iDrac FIRMWARE, LifeCycle.
On POST boot screen "System Services Update Required"
I think that my server don't have USC, on this version/generation.
Some attempts that i did:
Configurate LAN parameters on DRAC options (CRTL+E on POST) > "after machine restarts, LAN parameters was reset to default factory"
FIRMWARE Upgrade in various versions (1.60, 1.90 e 1.96) from O.S. > says "A Firmware update operation is already in progress"
FIRMWARE Upgrade from Linux CentOS Dell DSET LiveCD > says "inventory Failure: Partition Failure - Creation of the dynamic partition has failed"
boot with SBUU + update firmware from SUU DVD > after reboot nothing changes
System Update Utility Firmware Update (version 1.67) from S.O. > Firmware Update in progress, wait 30 min > after EXIT CODE 1 Failure
Clear NVRAM from MB CMOS Jumper > try 5 times nothing changes, only BIOS loses all information
racadm racreset or racresetcfg > "A fimware update is currently in progress, unable to reset the RAC at this moment"
racadm fwupdate -g -u -a MY_TFTP_Server -d firmimg.d6 > "A Firmware update operation is already in progress"
One more important information, after monitoring network switch i do not found entries from iDRAC MAC Address
The iDrac6 module/card is broken?
any ideias?
Need help finding Perc Battery 312-0448
Hi,
I know this is an old post, but I'm looking for the part # 312-0448 (PERC battery), but I can't find it on Dell's site. Where can I find the product page?
Thanks

T420 consumer SATA compatibility with hot plug option
Is it possible to run consumer SATA drives in the hot plug bays of this server using the PERC H710 RAID controller? If so, which caddy do I need?
I have no interest in any server level HDDs, but require the CPU and memory expansion possible with this server.
Poweredge t710 memory
Dual Processor - Current configuration:
(12) 8GB DDR3-1333 dual ranked RDIMMS
A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6 populated -- A7, A8, A9 not occupied
B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6 populated -- B7, B8, B9 not occupied
Memory mode: optimizer
Questions:
1. Under this configration what is the operating speed of the memory?
2. What is the maximum amount of memory that can be installed and still operate at 1333MHz?
I think that in the current configuration the memory is operating at 800 MHz.
I think that the maximum configurable amount of memory operating at 1333MHz would be 96GB with (6) 16GB RDIMMS occupying the following slots:
A1, A4, A7, B1, B4, B7
PE T320 Hyper-V Guest latency fixed by BIOS update to Host
Twice now I have had the Exchange 2010 guest on my W2K8 Standard Server with Hyper-V suddenly suffer a massive amount of latency and become practically locked up out of the blue. After hours of troubleshooting, rebooting, and researching - as a last-ditch effort I noticed that the BIOS was out of date. I upgrade BIOS and then everything magically works again.
Anywhere from 2-4 months pass and rinse & repeat.
I'm going out on a limb here but I suspect that there's something about the system that gets flushed out during a bios update that is causing the problem, but I'm at a loss to determine what that is. I want to proactively avoid having my customer's Exchange server fail, but it goes against my better judgment to apply BIOS updates proactively. We've had the motherboard swapped out already due to a bad DRAC, and the problem keeps happening.
I could use some help in identifying what else I can do to prevent this from happening in the future. TIA
