PowerEdge R710 - BIOS & Firmware Update

Scenario:-

Server not on internet and cannot be connected to internet as well. So an offline process is the only solution (LC cannot be used). But  the server is running VMware 5.5, not WIndows OS

What are the possible ways to update the BIOS and firmwares?

Is there an bootable ISO available same like IBM updatexpress which contains all the updates and can boot in to cd and perform the updates?

Upgrading a 3rd party bios on a PE1850

I have a Dell Poweredge 1850 I took in trade from a customer that was upgrading. In trying to repurpose it I discovered if has a Mcafee SCM appliance bios, that won't let me overwrite it. I tried two fixes I had read about for other dell servers editing the autoexec.bat files with -forcetype and -forced in both lower and upper case. Neither worked. I also tried the Dell OEM type bios which didn't work either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a PowerEdge 2850 that had been running fine. I removed the cover to replace the raid battery and it's been giving me an E000 Intrusion Detection Error ever since. I replaced the Riser/SCSI raid board which also has the intrusion detection switch with 2 known good working units and still get the same error. Is there a quick and easy way to fix this issue?

How to configure/setup a VRTX for file share/backup and recovery/VMs...

Hi All,

I'm new at the Dell Forums Tech questions and need your help, PLEASE:

We are a 60 users, a combination of DevOps and Architects (building Hospitals) in need of a new file share, one option in mind is the Dell VRTX to be used as follows:

-File Share, files to replicate to AWS (MS FRS File Replication Services or MS DFS R Distributed File Solution).

-Backup and recovery, we talked about Dell AppAssure software only (think is a great solution, how compatible is it with NetBackups???)

-VMs: print server, license server for Autodesk/Revit, Secondary DC
-MS server 2012 for the VMs and server 08 for DCs/print server/lic server

Where I need help is choosing the proper hardware: CPU, RAM, RAID config and OS configuration. Please direct me to the right path.

Thank you ahead of time.

[PowerEdge R720] PCIe Training Error : Slot x

$

Hello,

I bought a PowerEdge R720 for my french DataCenter in Paris. I'm located in Montréal, Canada.

The purpose of this server was to capture Over The Air signal and stream it using many Hauppauge WinTV HVR-2200 cards.

I'm already using a bunch of these cards in many servers, including Dell servers. It always worked perfectly. But not with the new one. I always got messages PCIe Training error : Slot 6.

If i keep cold reboot it, sometimes it passes that step, but all cards are not recognized, only one. And the one recognized doesn't work properly.

I contacted the french support, and it have been headaches until now : They are telling me that card is not compatible with this server (i still don't know why). They doesn't want to support that server!

They told me to upgrade firmwares, what i've done, but it's still not working.

I don't know what to do to have my setup working. I already saw a lot of posts of that type in this forum, so i hope that someone will answer me. I was happy about Dell until then. But i have to admit that i'm really disappointed : french support doesn't seems to have any tech skills. When someone tell you that this card can't work because you don't have a graphic card in the server ... It's demoralizing !

Thanks.

PE1800 - 650w PSU wiring diagram or connector specs?

$

Hi all, my first post here. I purchased a used PE1800 and am starting the process of converting it to a Windows Home Server.

The OEM power supply does not include SATA power connectors, however there are two Molex connectors available. I plan to install two 1TB WD drives and will use Molex>SATA adapters. However, I might want to install add'l drives in the near future, and thus would have no more power connectors available.

There is an unused 12-pin power connector of some sort (looks like half of a 24-pin ATX power connector) that intrigues me. Would it be possible to find/make an adapter that could utilize this spare connector and create more SATA power connections? Is this was would have plugged into a SCSI backplane? The machine has a drive cage with hot-swap trays but no backplane (the one SATA HDD is connected normally.)

I can't find any wiring diagrams, specs or anything specific to the PSU. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!
TOM

dell R720 issue

$

Hi can you help please to my customer with this issue? The servers we use have 4 NIC's 2 X 1Gig 2 X 10Gig Unlike any other hw we had in the past, the Linux detects the ports as follow - eth0 = 10G #1 eth1 = 10G #2 eth2 = 1G #3 eth3 = 1G #4 On another HW it is detected as follow - eth0 = 1G #3 eth1 = 1G #4 eth2= 10G #1 eth3 = 10G #2 This fact ( 10 G before 1G ) complicates the installation, please check with dell if it’s possible to change the order of the Nics. Anther example - In the Idrac we see - NIC.Integrated.1-1-1 Ethernet = C8:1F:66:ED:02:35

Unable to upgrade DRAC6 firmware past 1.10.13 on R610

$

Hello,

I have a number of R610s which I need to upgrade the DRAC firmware on, so they can talk to our new management system. Most of them upgraded fine when I stepped the versions gradually from 1.10.13 (their initial version) to 1.97.

About 7 of them, however, will not move past 1.10.13. I have firmware version 1.11 available via TFTP; when I attempt to install this (via idracadm from the local OS, or from a separate box, or via the SSH admin console) I first get "Firmware update is not currently in progress" then "Firmware update operation failed" on subsequent attempts until I perform a racreset. I have tried clearing out space by deleting the system logs, I have performed a factory reset, drained the flea power and the problem still persists.

I have also tried updating using the bootable media from the Dell Repository Manager as mentioned here http://lonesysadmin.net/2011/03/07/the-easiest-way-to-update-a-dell-servers-firmware/. No joy.

Finally I tried updating from a fresh install of CentOS; the upgrade appears to start but never finishes; fwupdate -s shows "Firmware update operation failed".

Are there any other approaches, or are there any logs I can check to see what is going wrong?

Thanks!

SC440 won't power up

I have an SC440 server and yesterday there was a power failure. The server stayed up on the UPS until my generator kicked in. It continued to run fine until I checked it after the street power came back on. I found that it was powered down. Now it won't power up. The yellow light on the motherboard is on and the power button is flickering. However when I push the power button nothing happens. Could the power supply be bad? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

My T610 - How to add an industry standard Heatsink and CPU?

$

0

Is it true?  Does Dell have me over the coals to buy a cpu kit, when I already have the CPU?

I have a standard bolt configuration heat sink and fan unit.  The bolts do not match up.   Any advice on how  to / where to go, to install the heatsink/fan unit.

After buying this server based on advetrising that claims 8 internal drive bays....Who, in this day and age, where you can slide a sata  drive into an enclosure , with no tools or screws, would ever think that I would need to order a drive caddy to install a drive into the 8 available bays!

$26 a peice with shipping....

Now, I am unable to install my 2nd CPU?

Seems like a great system, but thinking I made the wrong choice.  Am I stuck?

Many thanks!
