Warranty for R820

$

Hello to all!

We have issue with Dell support and warranty - here is the situation - customer bought last year (2013) server R820 with 5Yr ProSupport and 4hr Mission Critical via official Dell distribution.

This year they decided to upgrade this server with additional HDD's. Because of official explanation regarding warranty from Dell they bought original Dell HDD's (via official distributor) and this disks warranty should be merged with  R820 warranty (KIT's have only 1 year warranty, they have on server 5Yr ProSupport and 4hr Mission Critical).

Now Dell support says that this can't be done...wtf...does anyone have any experience with that and what is the procedure? Where is the point to buy 3x more expensive disks via official channel then if this can't be done?

Thank you for any useful idea.

Intel Processors.

Hi guys,

As I am new to the world of servers I have a question regarding the Intel processor series on the PE rack servers.

Currently I see that the available generation of Intel Processors from the R320-R620 is the E5-24XX series.

Previously if I am not mistaken there were Intel ER-56XX series processors or something like that.

However I notice that when Intel released a new generation of processors, although number of cores available, L3 and L2 cache increase, processor speeds decrease or stay the same.

Would it be possible for somebody to explain this at a basic level and if possible link me to some really great reading material.

Thanks in advance,

Hosni

Dell PowerEdge 600SC MotherBoard Size for a new case

For the past few days I have been surfing the net to try and find out what size motherboard is in the Dell PowerEdge 600SC.

I would like to buy a replacement case because fans are old and worn, also the case has seen better days and because I have moved house and I don't have a little hideaway for the server anymore I would like to replace the case so it doesn't look terrible when people see it however I just can't find the type of motherboard anywhere so I am able to buy a replacement case.

Can anybody help me out please?

Is there a way to test PSU's. Poweredge 2950 II psu's not working.

I have a Poweredge 2950 II server for home use that is only on part time. When I went to turn it on, nothing happened. Its the PSU's as I tested one from a Poweredge 1950 that I also have.

Is there any way to test the psu or manually turn it on somehow. Im not sure what happened that both simply wont do anything.

PowerEdge T20 Onboard Raid raid enabled = no offboard raid bios

I'm in the process of installing Server 2012R2 on my T20 and after getting the OS setup on my RocketRaid 2720 (due to the fact the T20 only supports 2 SATA 6gbs devices), I enabled Intel Raid in bios and upon reboot, the Intel Raid bios comes up, I can configure the drives plugged into the onboard SATA ports, however the bios for the 2720 no longer comes up.

In the bios I cannot find any settings for changes to allow an addin card's bios to function. So I popped the 2720 in my supermicro server and enabled the on-board Raid and both raid controller bios come up and allow configuration.

I assume all we need is a bios update, so..... lets go Dell!!

R210 Wont Boot

We have an PowerEdge R210 server. On going to the server today the monitor was blank and the mouse / keyboard was not functioning. (these are plugged into the USB slots on the rear of the server). I obtained a known working mouse, keyboard and monitor with vga cable and plugged into the front ports.

On a reboot the screen remained blank. no life in the mouse / keyboard. Unfortunately i had to do the manual power off and back on using the power button.

On start up, i pressed the power on button, lights on front flash briefly then the server seem to turn it self off. a second or two later, the server power up and appeared to go through startup although the monitor remained blank. Blue LED on the front and rear of server. No startup beeps were heard.

Anyone any ideas why this unit doesnt seem to be loading up.

I have a T620 with one Perc H310 connected to the backplane.

In the iDrac when I go to storage I get the following error:

RAC0501: There are no physical disks to be displayed. 1. Check if the host system is powered off or shutdown. 2. Check if the physical disks are inserted into the enclosure or attached to the backplane. 3. There are no out-of-band capable controllers detected.

Also when I go to Physical Disk, Virtual Disk or Controller I get

RAC0503: There are no out-of-band capable controllers to be displayed. Check if the host system is powered off or shutdown.

I tried resetting the drac using the command and powering down, still get the same.

is this normal

R420 chassis heating due raid controller card

$

hi

we purchased 6 servers from dell india.

we are facing a severe heating issue on top of the chassis above the raid card with all these 6 servers.

server configuration

R420 - single hexcore processor 2.2 ghz, 32gb ram

4 X 600 gb 15000 rpm drives
(configured as 2 drives in raid 1 + 2 drives in raid 1)

these servers are placed in a datacenter -- temperature is around 18 deg C

we are facing a severe heating issue at the on top of the chasiss just above the raid controller

when the servers are placed one above the other like they are normally placed in a datacenter the servers heat up between 50.4 - 57 deg celcius

dell support has changed motherboard, raid card , power supply etc of one of the above servers which is non-production (heating to 50.4 deg celcius) but the issue is not resolved

On closer examination of the raid controller card i noted that the fins of the heatsink on top of the raid controller card --  instead of being parallel to the airflow is actually perpendicular to the air flow and is actually trapping all the heat

the same card in a R620 server has the heatsink fins parallel to the air flow which remains cool

has anybody else in this forum noted this and are facing such a heating issue ?

could you please check this and let me know the resolution to this problem

can the heatsink be turned around by 90 degrees so that the fins of the heat sink are parallel to the airflow ?

thanks for your help

PowerEdge T310 Fan Noise

$

I've found numerous dated articles on line regarding the issue with these Dell PowerEdge T310's and their fan noise.

I've updated the BIOS to the latest version from 1.1 to 1.2 but the problem still continues. The system spins up the fans to max as soon as the system is switched on and keeps them at that speed for the entire duration of the system being on.

One of my past colleagues had install Ubuntu on the system and the fans used to slow down once it had booted into the OS. We're currently trying to rebuild the server but have ran into this problem which is so loud it's impossible to work in the same large room as it.

Please advise!

R510 - Viable memory upgrade plan?

So, I have a R510, currently with 64GB (8GB pieces populating all eight slots). From my understanding, slot 4 in each lane is a separate bank. So would it be possible to replace the 8GB piece in each fourth slot with a 16GB piece (i.e., the total memory would be 80GB)?

T310 Fan Noise

$

I know that this topic may have been posted before but I still cannot find a clear answer as to how to reduce the fan noise of Poweredge T310 without having to make any changes to the hardware.  Is there a way of changing a setting on the BIOS?  Our unit sits next to our old Compaq server and there's a huge difference between the two in term of fan noise, when the ambience temperature is not slightly warm (ie. when the air conditioner of the room is turned off).

Any suggestion/comment will be much appreciated.

Hi,

I'm trying to find the correct set of sliding rails for the PE R610, but can't find any. I've tried searching for part TY301, but no look. Could you give me a link that allows me to order them (also with the cable management arm)?

Thanks,

Chris.

R710 LCD Display Reset (AMBER TO BLUE) HOW?

$

Need to reset Error Code on LCD Display for our 2010 Dell R710 Server, and unaware of process to complete reset (READ CLEAR ERROR). For the uninitiated, normal LCD Display is Blue, but I'm currently haunted by AMBER COLOR DISPLAY reading old ERROR Message that I'm unable to clear.

For those interested, the ERROR Code relates to PowerSupply Issue, but it's neither an issue, nor problem, but persistant LCD IS.

Believe answer lies in OPEN MANAGE Software, but we virtualized the R710 enviornment, running Vmware ESXi v4.1, and no longer have access to OPEN MANAGE, thus wondering what now?

Thoughts and Solutions would be Greatly Appreciated. I'm ashamed to admit I've spent over a day trying to resolve this insignificant issue.

Update BIOS on PE2950 McAfee Appliance

$

We purchased 2 "still in the box" PE2950's that were built as McAfee Appliances.  While seemingly DELL in every other way, we cannot update to the current DELL BIOS (marked as CRITICAL).  We also found we cannot install a functioning OMSA application on an otherwise stable Windows 2008 x64 platform.

Short of replacing the motherboards, is there a way to "FORCE" a BIOS update or otherwise return these systems to native DELL?

I realize asking to hack a DELL product on an official DELL forum is less than wise but nonetheless appreciate any help / direction you can offer.
