Dell UPS 1000 Tower Monitoring Software

$

It seems something happened to the servers to where their Dell UPS monitoring software quit working ~5/13.  They simply didn't see the UPSs.  I installed some new software that I found for them, Dell ULNM, and it found the UPS fine again and displays things about it.  However, the old software used to test the UPS.  This software simply logs events, such as logging in, and shows you how long it will run in an emergency.  However, before the 5/13 time frame, I had one server that showed a steady downward trend in the history that said the UPS had about had it.  With this software, it says every thing is perfect, and that it will hold up the system for a long time based on the current draw.  The UPS is 4 1/2 years old.  I don't see anywhere in the new version where  the software tests the UPS like the old software did, nor any log events of it having done it.  The only thing I see in the logs, is when I logged in, and a place to set up the server to inform me if there are problems.  It is not possible to know the condition of a battery nor how much time it will hold up the server from the voltage, without running discharge tests.  I need something that will analyze the UPS from time to time so I know where they are at.  (Yes, I do know that Dell got out of the UPS business)  What I want to know is, where/what revision gives me the old functionality, and where can I download it from?

R420 chassis heating due raid controller card

$

hi

we purchased 6 servers from dell india.

we are facing a severe heating issue on top of the chassis above the raid card with all these 6 servers.

server configuration

R420 - single hexcore processor 2.2 ghz, 32gb ram

4 X 600 gb 15000 rpm drives
(configured as 2 drives in raid 1 + 2 drives in raid 1)

these servers are placed in a datacenter -- temperature is around 18 deg C

we are facing a severe heating issue at the on top of the chasiss just above the raid controller

when the servers are placed one above the other like they are normally placed in a datacenter the servers heat up between 50.4 - 57 deg celcius

dell support has changed motherboard, raid card , power supply etc of one of the above servers which is non-production (heating to 50.4 deg celcius) but the issue is not resolved

On closer examination of the raid controller card i noted that the fins of the heatsink on top of the raid controller card --  instead of being parallel to the airflow is actually perpendicular to the air flow and is actually trapping all the heat

the same card in a R620 server has the heatsink fins parallel to the air flow which remains cool

has anybody else in this forum noted this and are facing such a heating issue ?

could you please check this and let me know the resolution to this problem

can the heatsink be turned around by 90 degrees so that the fins of the heat sink are parallel to the airflow ?

thanks for your help

Hi,

Since two weeks I am getting error message on my server, "W1228 ROMB Batt 24hr".

I know I have to replace RAID Controller Battery in this case, I already ordered one:

but when I was about to unplug and replace one that is currently plugged:

I noticed that they have slightly different parameters.

I am not hardware expert so I just would like to ask if it is safe to proceed with replacement in this case.

Thank you!

Power Edge 1900 doesn't power on. Fans twitch and then nothing.

OK so basically 2 weeks ago we started noticing that our 1900 would have some trouble booting from a cold boot.  It would take longer than usual and occasionally just sit there like it didn't want to turn on but eventually would.

Last friday it would't power on giving us Error code E171F (which I believe is related to the PCI Raid card) and CPU 1 error code E1410.

We replaced the card and the server powered on and stayed on for a while (maybe 30 minutes or so) but then just turned off.

Now it will not power on at all.  The fans twitch a bit like they're about to turn on but then nothing.

The power LED is green, PSU LED is green, the only code on the LCD panel is for the intrusion alarm, etc.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?  Would a bad PSU not have some sort of LED indicator as such?  Could it be the motherboard itself?  I'm not really sure what is going on at this point.

Thanks for any info or suggestions.

EDIT: The rear LED is not green like I thought.  It's flashing solid amber on/off.

EDIT #2: Holding down the system identification button for 5 seconds produces an "E7" message on the front LCD.

Poweredge C2100 BMC disconnects during bios

$

Hello,

We have a Poweredge C2100 which comes with a BMC controller and shared network port. Recently Dell changed its motherboard under warranty and ever since I am not able to use the remote console when the BIOS comes up for RAID configuration. If I keep rebooting multiple times, I might catch it during the end portion of BIOS but never get upto the CTR+R for RAID configuration.

Could this be a firmware issue?

Basically, I want to change the bootable virtual drive and install 2 different OS on separate virtual drives.

I have the megaraid controller which connects to the server on network while it is running esxi but it does not give me anyoption to change the bootable virtual drive.

Thanks

Hello All, I am trying to find out what is the fastest cpu that can go into my PE 2900. I purchased this on the cheap from a church ($300) never been used still in box. I am sure I'll have to do BIOS updates and possibly replace some internal batteries, but can someone tell me the fastest processor that this unit can take. It presently has a single PROCESSOR, 80563Q, XCL, E5345, LGA771, G0 Thanks ajinc1

PE 2950 No Power

I have a first gen PE 2950 with redundant PSUs that is unable to power up.  Specifically, when I plug in live 208V (also tried a set of 120V) power cables to both PSUs, neither PSU will light up their appropriate LEDs.  I've tested the server with power cables that I know work (tested by voltmeter and plugging into other hardware) and still nothing.  This server has been offline for the last 3 months (no power cables attached to server) but was working just fine before then.

So, am I forgetting something that is preventing this server from powering up?

Thanks!

Poweredge T20 disk running hot

Hello

I have the Xeon based poweredge T20 with Nas4Free loaded.  The Stock 1TB disk that came with it runs constantly without load at 40º and if it is working up to 45-46º.  According to the Nas4free forums this is too high.  Should this disk be running so hot?  Does it have a problem?

If it is normal, what can I do to reduce the temp...fan or something?

many thanks

PowerEdge 2970 Boot Issue

$

I have a PowerEdge 2970 that failed to boot after a Windows update.  We could not even get to the BIOS screen.  So, following some other posts here, I basically pulled everything, and started installing parts one at a time.

The unit boots (with the memory configuration error) if I only put dimms in slots 1/2, but if I put dimms in slots 5/6 (processor 2)... no boot.

I have 4 4Gb sticks, and I have swapped all of them into positions 1/2, so I know the sticks are good.

It would seem as if my issue is either the memory slots or the processor, so I am wondering if I should bother swapping the processors first?

Mixing 2Rx4 and 2Rx8 DDRIII Memory DIMMs

Dears

I Searched for alot of forums in dell community about mixing Dual Rank memories with Different bits x4 & x8 and i couldn't find a decisive answer.

can we mix between Dual Rank 4 bit DIMMs and Dual Rank 8 bit DIMMs ? (2Rx4 / 2Rx8)

T610 - 6GB is NOT sufficient!

I bought this a few years ago, and it seemed OK initially...

After restarting it's used perhaps 3.5GB. After a bit of time it's up to something near 5.8GB and lagging significantly.

This is the memory which my profile shows is installed:

> DUAL IN-LINE MEMORY MODULE, 2G, 1333, 2RX8X72, 8, 240, UBE

Processor (1):

> E5520, 2.26/5.86, 8MB, XDN, D0

Obviously, three of those.

I'm thinking that bringing it up to double or triple that would give me some headroom. I"m running SBS2008, and not much else except a dental practice management program.

The memory was "unbuffered", but I really have no idea why that was picked for the install.

Is it better to add memory to what I've got (would have to be the same?) or take it out and go with perhaps 3x8GB's ?? Buffered.. unbuffered???

Does it matter if it's DELL memory??

THANKS

Replace CD with DVD, PE2850, drive not found

$

Throwing away old Toshiba laptops, I pulled out their slimline DVD-RWs, thinking I might use them in a couple of older PE2850s that I have.  So, I pulled the CD-ROM out of a PE2850, replaced the CD in the carrier with a DVD-RW, and slid it into place.  On boot, the BIOS told me "CD-ROM drive 0 not found."  I tried a second DVD-RW, same result.

Do I have to only use optical drives provided by Dell?  The things seem pretty interchangable to me.  Or is there some firmware update required for the server to use a DVD?

M520 slows down unexpectedly

Heres a great one for you guys..

I have TWO M520s configured identically that exhibit this problem.  Approximately every 1-2 weeks, they will slow down to about 5% of their normal speed -- as measured with some cpu benchmarking tools.

I've killed the network connection to them to limit any outside interference.. and rebooted (warm boot).  The problem still exists.  I've even tried to warm boot and boot using PXE (to eliminate the OS completely from the problem).  I run memtest86+ v5.0.1  and you can see the speed problem while doing a memory test..  horribly slow.

The only thing that will "fix" the issue is if I cold boot the server (power switch or via the drac works fine).  Then the servers are good to go for another 1-2 weeks before randomly slowing down again.

The hardware is a M520, single E5-2420, dimms in DIMMA_2 & 3 (16gb 1333mhz dual-rank), H710 raid, and no mezz cards.  BIOS is 2.1.4.

Things I've tried: switching from memory-mirroring to multi-bit ECC mode, upgrading RAID card (was H310) and fw,  upgrading NIC firmware, upgrading iDRAC fw (now on 1.57.57), upgrading LC fw.

I don't believe I had this issue when I was on v1 of the BIOS.  I believe it is a firmware bug involving CPU throttling.
