PowerEdge server blinking amber light on HDD

$

My poweredge server which is a DC, dns, dhcp, and file server has a blinking amber light to drive 2. I did not build this server so have no idea what raid is used. Can I hot swap the drive with a new drive?

disk management states drive 3 needs to be initialized. however, the server is running perfectly fine. i'd like to fix both issues, not sure if the blinking amber light is triggering the initializing issue as well.

Thanks!

Expand partition for RAID1

i have an old PowerEdge SC440 that ran out of drive space.  i upgraded the drives (two drives, mirrored) by removing one, adding the new larger drive, letting the RAID resync and then repeating the process for the second drive.

that worked fine except that now i need to figure out how to access the additional hard drive space.  i knew i would need to expand the partition, but when i look at Disk Management in Server Manager (Windows Server 2008R2), the only option i have is to shrink the volume, not expand it.

is there another tool i should use to expand the existing partition to claim the rest of the new drive space?

openmanage takes down eth0 on starting up

I just installed the latest openmanage on centos 6.5 (64bit) but it can happen on centos 5 too, on starting up openmanage disables eth0 taking the network offline. Restarting the network brings it back but that's not ideal as on a normal reboot the same will happen again.

These are dell R300 servers that it happens to, others are ok, any ideas on how to fix this?

Options to update a Poweredge R710 server with latest firmware when ESXi 5.0 is installed

Hello,

What are my options to update the Poweredge R710 server when ESXi 5.0 is installed?

Unfortunately is the Lifecylce Controller broken, it is in a loop and restart the server all the time until I pull the plugs off the server.

As another way I downloaded the Dell Repository Manager 1.4 and created the Linux V440 bundle. I was able to export the bundle to a SUU iso. Can I now boot the server with this ISO and apply the firmwares?

Actually I wanted to use the deployment media option, but it fails to create the ISO.

Uff, I don't have an easy time to upgrade my servers with the new firmwares.

Thanks,

Edy

Redundant power supply fans continuously change speed (together) on Poweredge C1100 (CS24-TY)

We have just purchased a used Poweredge C1100 (CS24-TY).  The redundant power supply fans continously speed up and slow down together on a cycle of about 10 seconds.  All other fans work normally and speed up and down based on load/heat.  We flashed the firmware for bios and the BMC and the PSU fans continue to cycle.  Problem is present while in bios or OS.  Is this normal?

Installing two memory modules of different sizes (PowerEdge T20)

$

Hello! I am planning on purchasing a couple of PowerEdge T20 servers, and I have a question about combining two memory modules of different sizes. To begin with, the online configurator won't let me uncheck the default system memory module, which is "4GB (1x4G) 1600Mhz Single Rank x4 Data Width UDIMM LowVolt". I'm wondering if I could purchase an 8GB memory customer kit and install both memory modules so that the total system memory would be 12GB and it would work properly. The Dell website doesn't reveal too many technical details about available memory modules for T20 to purchase, so this is all I know about these two modules:

  • 4GB (1x4G) 1600Mhz Single Rank x4 Data Width UDIMM LowVolt (default)
  • 8GB Memory, 1600Mhz, Dual Ranked UDIMM (Customer Kit)

This is what the User's Guide says:

A maximum of two UDIMMs can be populated in a channel. Populate all sockets with white release tabs first, and then black. Populate the sockets by highest rank count in the following order — first in sockets with white release levers, and then black. Memory modules of different sizes can be mixed only if other memory population rules are followed. For example, 2 GB and 4 GB memory modules can be mixed.

So, will it work if I for example install the 4GB module into socket 1 and the 8GB module into socket 2?

Thank you in advance!

Hello - I have 2 PE1950s. One is gen III and the other gen II. I have updated all firmware etc to the latest version available when I did an OS reinstall (Centos 6.4).

I am having an issue on both of these serves with openmanage reporting a "Cache Battery 0 in controller 0 is Failed". I have already replaced the battery once but it still shows me the error. There are no amber lights on the server itself and ESM log reports "Health : Ok"

I realized the battery might not actually be bad, however I like to monitor my servers with the nagios openmannge plugin and of course it has been throwing errors on these 2 servers.

anyone have any ideas as to have I can remedy this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

How to set up zoning in Dell C8000XD, also can't find anything about C8000MA

$

I have received a C8000 + C8000XD storage sled, which is working fine, i.e., all disks are visible through all controller ports.

The documentation seems to indicate that one can set up zoning, however, there is no MMI and/or web interface on the storage sled.

The chassis+storage sled did request a DHCP address using the front RJ45 jack,

but I'm not sure what it was for as there are no ports open.

The Quick Start Guide shows a mysterious device called the C8000MA or C8000 Management Appliance.

I cannot find anything about this on the Dell web site.

Dell, the documentation of the whole C8000 product line is incredibly dismal.

BTW: the chassis seems to be fine; I inserted a C8220 in "independent" BMC mode, and was able to get into the web server on the

compute sled BMC. I can't figure out how to configure the storage sled.

NIC Teaming on R610

I have "inherited" a network with R410 and R610 servers.  Several have had NIC teaming set up...but I cannot determine how the teaming was accomplished.  (I came from a predominately HP oriented background).  The servers have the Broadcom embedded NICs...but there are no Broadcom utilities installed. (BACS)

I'm scratching my head as to how this would have been done...and/or why the utilities might have been uninstalled if in fact they were used to do the teaming.

Or...am I just missing something obvious?  Is there a built-in "Windows way" to do this?  (Server 2008 R2)

Dell SC1425 and Intel Xeon Dual Core 7140M 800Mhz CPU

I currently have a SC1425 that had a Single Core 3.6Mhz 800Mhz CPU.  Everything worked.  I decided to upgrade to a 7140M Dual Core.  Both cpus are 604 socket.  I installed the 7140M, but the server won't go through the POST.  I just get a black screen.  I'd like to know if the 7140M processors work on the SC1425 motherboard?  Oh, I'm also using the A03 bios.  Thanks.

T420 Graphics support?

$

I recently got a T420 for Desktop virtualization in a lab environment.  I'm not doing VDI but I am going to be running multiple VMs at a time, one of which will be my daily work VM.  I have no need for a several thousand dollar GPU but I would like better graphics than the on board [] that most servers are given.  No crazy gaming but some GPU capability would be nice.  Here is the rub.  It seems the ONLY cards this guy supports are the Q4000 and Q6000 Nvidia cards?  Seriously?  Is this really the case? I don't care about Dell supporting it but I am not allowed to use my $100 Graphics card from Best Buy?  I really hope I'm just missing something.  Can the T420 use graphics cards other than the Nvidia Q4000 or Q6000?  If not, does anyone know why?  Is this a bios enforced limitation?  Is it some other technical limitation?

BROADCOM 10GbE 2P 57810S-k Mezzanine card on Poweredge M620

Hi,

I have a problem with new mezzanine cards BROADCOM 10GbE 2P 57810S-k.

they wont work on 10g speed they only work on 1g.

I have updated the firmware to first 7.2.14 and then to 7.2.20, but still nothing.

The operating systems are Oracle Linux 6.3 on one server and Opensuse 12.1 on the other server.

I have tried the Opensuse 12.2 also and different Kernels on all linux-es.

I even tried forcing it on 10g:

In Linux I tried the following

ethtool -s p3p1 speed 10000 duplex full autoneg off

ethtool -s p3p1 speed 10000 duplex full autoneg off

on switches I tried:

console(config-if-Te1/0/9)#speed 10000

Auto-negotiation has been disabled. Auto-negotiation should be enabled for

copper ports at any speed and is required for copper ports running at 1G or

higher speeds per IEEE 802.3.Auto-negotiation must be disabled on fiber

ports.

Fiber ports must be configured for full duplex.

After that ssh was stopped and I couldn`t ping the server anymore.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Marko.

System Board Power Optimized - Degraded - R610

$

Greetings,

I've noticed that openmanage reports System Board Power Optimized - Degraded, with a cause of Unknown Reason.  I'm not sure why this is happening, but I'm hoping I can get that resolved.  After looking around the forums, I did find a similar post, however, their issue was due to only having a single power supply.

I'm not 100% sure what to look for on this, as everything else is reporting a good status.

System Information:

  • PowerEdge R610
  • Revision II
  • BIOS - 6.4.0
  • iDRAC version 1.96.00 (build 1)
  • Lifecycle - 1.6.0.73
  • CPU: Dual X5677 @ 3.47GHz
  • PSU: Dual 717W [Firmware 04.18.00]
  • RAM: 12  2GB RDIMM Modules
  • RAID: PERC H700 [Firmware: 12.10.6-0001]

The system is running Windows Server 2008 R2 X64 Enterprise.  I've also ran the Dell Online Diagnostics 2.21.0, which did not report any major issues.  (other than not having media in the cdrom drive)

If there is any other information that would be helpful, or anything that I would need to check, I would be more than happy too..

Thanks
