i got a vrtx chassis with 2 blades and 10 6GB/s sas disks 300GB each.

I will be installing esxi on both. should i use raid 10 or raid50? If i use raid 10, should i use all 10 disks and leave 2 spares? same with raid50?

2 spares will leave me with 300GB disk less in the array which i could definitely use.

any suggestions?

PE2800 Memory Issue

I am trying to get 4 2GB single rank DIMMs to run in a PowerEdge 2800.  Everytime I populate DIMM slots 1a, 1b, 2a and 2b I get a single long beep at boot and an inconsistent memory error.  I know without a doubt all 4 DIMMs are identical.  Trying to get the machine to 8 GB and can't seem to get DIMM slots 2a and 2b to allow a chip.  Any ideas?

R610 RAM Configuration

We're upgrading our RAM on our servers.  They all currently have 2gb DIMMS.  We have purchased 8 gb DIMMS.  How would be best add the 8 gb DIMMS to our servers to get the max memory?

For example, let's say there are currently 8, 2gb DIMMS and we want to add 2, 8 gb DIMMS.  What would be the best configuration for that?

Thank you.

PowerEdge R520 Memory Upgrade

Hello everyone, hope you could help me on this one:

I don't know why it's so difficult to search for a memory upgrade: when displaying the original configuration with the service tag, the "Parts Number" doesn't match manufacturer number nor Dell part number, it's one big mess...

I have a PowerEdge R520 with a "0R45J" Parts Number memory (32GB, RDIMM, Low Voltage, 1333, Quad Rank, etc.). It's just one module of 32GB RAM of those descriptions, but it doesn't appear like if it was compatible with R520. It says compatible with 620, 515, 420, 720 and others.

I found at Dell Store (Shop) online, this exact memory (although there are two items that match):

1. Dell Part Number A6994464

2. Dell Part Number A6994475

How to know which one is exactly the 0R45J part number listed in the original configuration via service tag?

My service tag is "[ADMIN NOTE:  Service Tag removed per privacy policy]".

Please help me!!!

our poweredge 1950 was working well untill we removed it from the rack for simple servicing. after fixing it back into the rack, it failed post.

it says pcie training error: embedded i/o bridge device 6, system halted.

it does not go past this stage. we don't have any pcie cards installed on the server, only the two unused riser cards.

what could be causing this, i need to have this server up ASAP.

Adding Dell PowerEdge Servers to a Rack

I have 2 Dell PowerEdge machines and I would like to add them to a rack. I'm confused on what type of rack I need to mount these. If I want to use the rails, do I need a special Dell cabinet? I was thinking about just buying a 2 post 25U open frame rack and mounting them and my other hardware on that. Would I have to have the rails for each poweredge for this to work? Or could I just set them on the bottom and then screw in the threaded screws thumb screws into the rack? I don't really care if the servers can slide out. Do I have to have the rails to mount them in any kind of a rack or just ones that are designed to have the servers slide out?

PowerEdge T100 becomes unresponsive with side panel installed

I have a 3.5 year old T100 server with a Core E5700 CPU that has worked perfectly for until recently.  The problem is when the side panel is on, the server will be running but become unresponsive.  The problem can start from a few minutes to a few days after powering up the server.  The mouse moves but nothing else seems to be happening.  The OS is Windows 2008 R2 SP1 fully patched.  I'm thinking heat related.  When the side panel is on, the server runs nice and quiet and has the problem.  When I take the side panel off the server runs fine for weeks, no problem.  Of course it is very loud.

I replaced the CPU to heat sink thermal computer which had become hard and brittle.   The problem still is occurring.

Anybody seen a similar issue and if yes did you solve it and how.

R410 keeps losing connection with one of the installed PSU's

Hi

I have a R410 which keeps losing its connection with either the first or second power supply. I have tried swopping and reseating these power supplied to no avail. The server never goes down, but its an irritating error, since it fills the ESM log in no time, which is then reflected as false negatives / alerts on my monitoring platform.

Any suggestions?

PowerEdge T300 Randomly Rebooting

Hi Everyone

My Dell T300 (w/ Windows 2008 Server) is acting very weird, the problem started 2 weeks ago and every couple days or every other day the server all of the sudden it reboots. This server normally during POST the fans speed up really high for few seconds and slow down to normal speed, but whenever the server has a sudden reboot, it stay stuck at the fan high speed for couple minutes with nothing on the screen, then it proceed to POST and everything goes back to normal, but last weekend the server got stuck on high speed fan for 2 days, nothing on the screen, had to pull the plug, and plug it again to work. I have looked into windows log and has absolutely no information why it's rebooting, only thing it says, the server had an unexpected shutdown, that's all. I ran all the hardware diagnostic tools provided on Dell server CD and everything passed with no problem. What could it be the problem??? Power supply maybe??? Thank you.

The front panel lcd on my poweredge 2850 is scrambled. I've tried replacing it and it is still scrambled.

I have reflashed the bios, esm, and bmc and re-seated the daughter card where esm apparently resides.

Anyone have any other ideas?

history

I'm in the process of mount SCO Unix OpSys 6.0 in DELL T620 INTEL XEON ES2690, two HD controlers, PERC H310 and RAID H710, two HD SAS disk 1GB eachone attached in perc310.

I resolve few of innitial conflicts to load SCO ps6.o Operational Systems, regular for me. ... but I'm sotcking at the 95% process installation, i have to mention the disk unix has created fines, partition fine, just at this point jump I IRQ-4 conflict ( i know for my bast expertice these means rs232 or com1 conflict configuration).

The solutions in another (old) Dell was just disable at the boot CMOS configuration , changing the IRQ-4 turning from on to off boot.

My problem is: in this model (DELL T620) aparently NOT exist CMOS or some control configuration, because the DELL Server is prepared to works as VMWare pr Linux or Windows OP. SYS. ...

Some one know how could I disable COM1 (IRQ 4) in this Dell server?

all sugets are wellcome

CPU compatibility C6100

I have a PowerEdge c6100 arriving soon.   It is a bottom end model with the Xeon 5520 processors. For the majority of what this server will be used for, that is more than enough. But for one blade the application in it will vastly benefit from a higher frequency rather than multi-cores. Doing a quick check I found that the 5520 is a socket 1366.  But when I check spec sheets for the server it mentions only the 5500 and 5600 series processors.  A little more digging shows that those 2 series were just factory options.   To my question: Is this server ~ONLY~ compatible with the 55/56 series processors or is it compatible with anything that fits the socket so to say?  Before I spend another grand on 2 CPUs with 3.4 Ghz I would like to know if they would work!

PowerEdge R910 - RHEL 6.4 - Clocksource problem

$

Dear All,

I am running RHEL 6.4 in a PowerEdge R910.

When I do:

# dmesg | grep -i clock

I am getting a lot of messages with this text:

"Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = 580433372 ns).  Enable clocksource failover by adding clocksource_failover kernel parameter."

I have been looking for a solution. Concretely, Red Hat propose the following:

https://access.redhat.com/site/solutions/434883

That is, changing the clocksource. However it did not solve the problem.

Actually, when I do:

cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/available_clocksource

my options are: tsc jiffies

so when I change the clocksource to jiffies, the problem remains.

I must say that the kernel writes those messages when the server is powered on/rebooted. Then, after a few minutes it stops.

Have any of you had this problem? Did you find any solution? Is it a symptom for a hardware problem?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Best regards,

Sebastian.

M1000e not recognising M710

We have recently moved an m1000e to one of our remote sites. It has four M710 servers, three of which are working fine. However I cannot power on the fourth blade. The CMC for the enclosure is showing the machine as two unknown half height blades instead of a full height machine.

I have tried moving the blade to a different slot inside the enclosure but get the same result.

I'm not sure what to try next. I thought about clearing the NVRAM but I'm guessing I can't do that as I can't power on the server.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Few more questions about the c6100

With the looming anticipation of the server arriving, I am looking into several secondary factors.

1:  I read that the approximate dB of this server sits around 70 dB,  Any suggestions as to dampening it without removing performance?

2: I stumbled upon an article that spoke of mineral oil cooling.  Since this server is already out of warranty, do you have any topics as far as dell goes on researching the application of, or any personal thoughts on the issue?  I see a lot of good reviews/studies from enthusiasts.  This would solve a cooling and sound related issues.

3: I read on another post that a user stated SSD worked for him. My retailer stated that they will not.  Who is right? What would I need to do to get them to work?

~Thanks again,  Tony
