Hi all,
I recently acquired a used Dell poweredge T320 server for personal use. Warranty expired last year.
It was working to start with however after attempting to clear flea power (see below) the server won't power on. iDRAC is still up/functioning (all components healthy), front panel LCD is operational, the LED on the motherboard is on (solid green), PSU lights are solid green and the onboard NIC's are showing link and activity lights.
iDRAC is reporting the following when I attempt to power on the server (power button on the front does nothing either):
PWR2402 | iDRAC is unable to communicate with power management firmware |
I've tried reseating the CPU, PSU's and PSU controller board without success. I've also removed all expansion cards and all RDIMM's except 1 (in slot A1) without impact. Given the symptoms below my suspicion is a dead motherboard.
Can anyone confirm this is likely to be the case, or suggest anything else I could attempt to repair the server? My understanding is the firmware flash/rollback function in iDRAC needs to power on the server to work, so I suspect that won't be an option.
Some further details if they help:
After starting the server I noted that virtually all of the firmware had not been updated since 2013, and so I used the Dell DUP tool in windows x64 to update firmware. This appeared to complete without issue.
Once the firmware was updated however the system fan was locked at 30% (confirmed with a stress test - no change in fan speed). I tried power cycling the server (physically disconnecting from power), as well as racadm racrest / changing system profile settings / BIOS restore to defaults / iDRAC restore to default settings etc. none of which helped.
Thinking it was a case of flea power preventing the server from resetting - I disconnected the power cables, popped the CMOS battery and let it sit overnight which lead to the server not powering on.
