Dell Server - Really? Server? I don't think so!

My company bought a PowerEdge R220 for $1,500. Not a high-end server, but we just need it to do some limited file serving. It came with 2 SATA 7200 RPM drives with a software RAID (RAID 1). It copies files at 4 MB/second. If you buy the cheapest computer at your local computer store you'll get 70-80 MB/second. Multiple calls to tech support yielded the same advice: this is about as fast as this server will be able to copy flles.

I ran tests from this Server copying from one network drive to another network drive, taking the Dell Server drives out of the equation, and got about 70+ MB/second. So it's clearly the Dell drives.

I called Dell for a return, but because I was just a few days outside their return policy date, they wouldn't budge. I asked to speak to a manager. And he wouldn't budge. Alex, ID 168907, Supervisor of Returns Department, San Salvador, El Salvador.

So I strongly encourage you to buy a Dell Server under 1 of the following 2 circumstances:

1) You want a server that copies files at 1/20th speed of a cheap desktop computer.

2) You want to spend money with a company that would rather keep your $1,500 rather than do the right thing and accept the blame for a server that isn't remotely qualified to be used as a server.

The fact that this U.S.-based company puts customer care in El Salvador tells you plenty about how they value customer care vs. saving money.

I am able to upgrade all the firmware on the R710 to the latest release from the SUU DVD except for the Dell OS drivers pack from 6.2.0.9 to 14.10.00.  I receive "update failure: secure copy failure - The secure copy function has failed.  How do I upgrade this?

IPMI error code 2900:0221 Power supply failure detected on PE R710

My VMware ESXi host recently took itself offline. When I was looking for the root cause, I ran a diagnostic test on my PE R710, and the following error was generated:

Error code: 2900:0221.
Msg: IPMI - <System Boot>: power supply: Power supply sensor (Status) Failure detected "PS 2"

The given error code and message can be used by Technical Support to help diagnose the problem.
Do you want to continue testing?

-- end of error message --

I saw a post online about updating the BIOS and firmware, which I did. We are now running BIOS version 6.4.0. I reran the test with the same results. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this problem? If the problem is indeed a failing power supply or a sensor on a power supply, how do I tell which one is bad? The lights on both power supplies look the same from the back of the server. This unit is no longer under warranty.

Internal server ports on VRTX

$

I feel like I'm going to get a painfully obvious answer here, but how do I activate more ports for a blade server in a VRTX chassis?

Both my blades have 2 of 4 ports active.  If i go into port config in the I/O module GUI, the other two ports show "down", but there are no options to bring them up.

This makes me think that each blade server would have a setting for how many of the internal NIC ports it uses, but I can't find such a setting anywhere in chassis management GUI.

What am I missing?

Poweredge BIOS 1.1.4 upgrade time?

Hi all,

I applied a BIOS update last night on an R630 server running Linux.  I was at 1.0.4 and upgraded to 1.1.4 using BIOS_9KCN3_LN_1.1.4.BIN.  The upgrade took around 40 minutes, and I was wondering if that was normal.  It seems to be kind of a long time for a BIOS flash, but the progress of the dots was steady and didn't seem to hang at any point.  Just curious!

Thanks!

Dell Power Edge T110 and T110 II Chassis Compatibility

What are the differences between the T110 and T110II chassis, or they are the same?
We had a small disaster and chassis of T110II was destroyed.
Could we install T110II motherboard to T110 chassis, the front panel is compatible (where Leds and USB)? And etc?
(The T110II MB, HDD's and PSU is fine.)

What model of perc 3 do I have, and informations about clear BIOS/configuration/nvram

Hello pals. Perc3 is beating me.

As I could see here

I have a perc 3 DC card.

Pictures attached

Here, I've seen about
For the perc controller, pull the Raid Key and DIMM and leave out tof the server for 5-10 minutes. Put the components back in, reboot and go into the bios of the Perc controller (Cntrl-"A"). Accept the configuration changes and the controller should take the configuration off the drives.

For the system NVRAM: Note the settings in the bios. Shut the server down, set the ISA_CLR jumper, restart the server and you should get a message that the jumper is set or that there is a configuration issue. Shut the server down, remove the jumper and restart. Go into the system setup (F2), reset any settings and reboot.
DIMM, ok, but "raid key", what is it?

I'm trying control with perc 3 a 6-bay SCA822 (LSI) with 4 10k SCSI Maxtor hd (73,4G) and 2 10K SCSI seagate with 36Gb (raid 5 4//2) to use with linux

The mobo is a desktop one, asrock extreme 3.

I used a LSI21320R, but after a non succesfull BIOS update, I bricked it, and choose perc3 to do the work, but... it don't detects nothing, and hangs during boot, and I mind that "zeroing all" will be enough (I wish)

Dear Experts,

we have a situation here in our server t710, we have installed 12GB of memory 6GB per processor, but when we perform a restart the system will suddenly only detect 10GB  i have no idea which dimm is it. then after we perfrom another restart the system will see 12GB again.

What might cause this problem?

I have aquired a Dell PowerEdge 2800 server and am looking to rebuild it and turn it into a home theater pc. I know, call me crazy. It only has one powewr supply and I don't think it works. Can I replace the bad one and add a second one then go from there as far as revamping the system?

Black screen after post

I have a Dell PE 2950 server that was booting fine a few weeks ago. Today I installed it in our rack and plugged in 4 new hard drives (in addition to the two that were in there). System would post but then go black and the LSI raid controller never came up and the system didn't boot into Windows.

So, I powered off the server and removed the extra drives. Powered on and same thing happened.

Next, I tried removing the network cable and the first two drives to try to minimize the configuration. CD/DVD tray was empty, no hard drives, no mouse, one USB keyboard connected (no PS/2 ports available) and a VGA monitor.

Same thing happened, in fact, it started happening even earlier in the boot process. The Dell splash screen and the loading bar show up and the bar doesn't even get halfway done before the screen goes black.

Finally, I tried removing the CMOS battery, waiting for several seconds, and putting it back in, then booting. Same results.

Any idea what could be wrong?

ATX Dell PSU to Offical ATX 2.0 spec pinout

$

Hey all I am using an old Dell Precision R5400 which has the 750w hot swap-able power supply. Problem being, since its a dell, the ATX pin layout is different than that of a normal, standard ATX 2.0 power supply pin out.

What I found to be the Standard ATX 2.0 pinout:

enter image description here

I have taken a volt meter to the R5400's ATX pinout and this is what I come up with:

[1] Ground [13] Ground
[2] +5v [14] +5v
[3] +5v [15] +5v
[4] +12v [16] +3.3vsb
[5] -12v [17] Ground
[ 6] Ground [18] Ground
[7] +3.3vsb [19] +12v
[ 8] +3.3v [20] +3.3vsb
[9] Ground [21] +12v
[10] +3.3v [22] +3.3v
[11] +3.3v [23] +3.3v
[12] +3.3v [24] +3.3vsb

Thankfully my motherboard's manual shows the pinout of it's ATX power supply connector: enter image description here

So some questions are still wondering inside my head:

1) What voltage should the PSON# be?
2) What voltage should the Power OK be?
3) As you see, I do not have access to a +5Vsb from the R5400 PSU. Can I just use a normal 5vdc for that (or somehow get 3.3vsb that I do have to work with it)?

Currently this is my pin-out for my new connector from the R5400 connector to the motherboard: enter image description here

So do you see anything wrong with the above? Just making sure as I do not want to fry a $500+ server motherboard over one wrong pin.

PowerEdge 1950 III, How to set up DRAC card for use with crossover cable

$

Hi,

So im trying to use the DRAC card by using a crossover cable, I have gone into the (CTRL+E) Configuration Screen and set up the LAN Parameters, DNS details but i cannot connect to the card at all.

Even the server itself cannot connect to the card. The server is just being used as a media server in my house, (yes overkill). It would be nice to configure this card as when i get new hard drives i will not have to connect a keyboard, mouse and monitor just to press a few buttons to set up a raid array.

Any help is appreciated,
Thanks.

hi, ive recently got hold of a poweredge 2900 v2 (i think) server, this is currently running dual xeon quad core 2ghz cpus (e54xx series) but every time i boot it up i get an error about communication failure with the Baseboard management controller, ive tried to get the bmc update but it always reports error that its not supported on this system configuration, . im pretty sure its down toa failed firmware update but i cant seem to force an update,

server works fine otherwise other than needing to press f1 everytime it starts and the fans running at full tilt at all times

cheers for any ideas at all on this - i have got a mainboard from an older 2900 also but this does not support my cpus so cannot use that as i need the 8 cores
