Need a way to change Bios settings with a controlled reboot

$

Hi,

I need a way to programatically change bios settings and be able to reboot the server myself - rather than the utility.  For example, if I use RACADM to change the bios settings, it will automatically reboot the server which messes up my automation.

Does anyone know how to programatically perform bios setting changes while being able to control when the server is rebooted?

Thanks

Hello,

We have a batch of rackmount T610 units that we want to convert back to tower units, I know there is a tower-to-rack conversion kit but I am trying to revert them back to towers so I need the rack-to-tower kits.

Does anyone know where to get them or even know what the part number is for this kit?

Thank you!

VLT0204 System board PS2 PG Fail voltage is outside of range. Contact support

Hi All,

I currently have two Dell Power Edge R720 servers. Both servers have redundant 1100W AC power supplies. Two weeks ago a power outage caused one power supply of each server to malfunction which were replaced under warranty by new power supplies.

Since then the PS2 socket of both servers have been reporting an error, VLT0204 System board PS2 PG Fail voltage is outside of range. Contact support.

In order to solve the problem I powered off the system and disconnected the power cords and pressed the power button. I then swapped the power supplies re-connected the power cords and powered on the system. I repeated this step for the second server. Both the systems now did not report the VLT0204 error.

However, the 'VLT0204 System board PS2 PG Fail voltage is outside of range. Contact support.' error message appeared on the front panel again. Repeating the steps above did not resolve the issue. I realised that this time the VLT0204 error became persistent.

Just to be sure that the error is persistent I cleared the hardware logs after which I can still see a critical error in the iDRAC Server Health -> Voltages section.

I used the DSET to generate the server report logs which too shows the VLT0204 error message. I can provide the entire zip file if needed.

Should I ignore this error message or should I send it to Dell for inspection under warranty.

Many Thanks

Sohaib

Hello  i am posting here because the precison 7910 is like a server (more than a desktop pc).

i need to power an expansion card with using a molex power coonector, but it's not present in the server any power plug.

It's available only a  pcie power but  no molex at all.

looking in the connector diagram i fount a j_tbu connector, that it's free and seems usable.

Do you know if it can be used to power a device ?

Do you knon the wiring diagram?

Any other idea?

Marco

Dell PowerEdge R310 Not Accepting 8GB Ram Sticks

Hello, we have a Dell PowerEdge R310, Service Tag 1YPZPW1, that is currently running 4 sticks of 4GB DDR3 800Mhz in slots 1, 2, 3 and 4. A partner of ours who manages the client installed 4 sticks of 8GB Ram and the server would not power on. I went onsite with brand new memory, 2 sticks of 8Gb, to add to the server to give it 32Gb and fill slots 5 and 6. I get error...

Maximum Rank Count Exceeded: The following DIMM has been disabled

And it disabled A2, A4, A6

I also get error:

Quad rank DIMM detected after single rank or dual rank DIMM in socket, A4

I moved RAM sticks around and eventually only had two 8GB sticks installed in A1 and A2 and and server would not pass POST or reach bios/start screen. I removed ram in A2 and server turns on just fine. I swapped ram in A1 to test both sticks of 8GB ram and both sticks allowed server to power on and pass post, go into Windows.

Why will server not accept the 8GB sticks in conjunction with the 4GB sticks?? I'm confused :(

PowerEdge C6100 + Crucial MX100s

I bought a PowerEdge C6100 off of EBAY: DELL POWEREDGE C6100 XS23-TY3 24B 8 x SIX CORE L5640 192GB NO HDD

I put some Crucial MX100 drives in and I cannot see them within the bios.  I do not have a RAID controller.

Can someone please explain what I should do next?  I do not see the Ctrl-R option.  I have tried ACHI, IDE, and other options within the bios.

Please let me know if anyone has any solutions...

Hi,

I plan to acquire a R730 wih the following Har Drives

RAID 1

- (2) 300GB 15K RPM SAS 6Gbps 2.5in Hot-plug Hard Drive,3.5in HYB CARR

RAID 5

- (4) 600GB 15K RPM Self-Encrypting SAS 12Gbps 2.5in Hot-plug Hard Drive,3.5in HYB CARR,FIPS140-2,13G

Questions:

1. Will this be ok ? I just need the Data Disks (RAID 5) to be encrypted/

2. Can I have both 6 Gbps and 12 Gbps drives in the same unit?

3. Where can I get the vSphere 6 installer for R720 / R730 servers?

Thanks,

Catalog on ftp.dell.com broken?

Hi all,

when trying to update one of our PER620 servers using Lifecycle controller I'm getting the error message

Unable to install the Update Packages. (SUP0531)

for downloading the catalog from ftp.dell.com as well as for a local SUU that I created on Friday using the Dell Repository manager.

I found an old entry here in the forum that stated this was happening in 2013 due to a broken catalog on the Dell site:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/servers/f/956/t/19503561

Is it possible, that the catalog is broken again?

Btw, the Repository manager now indicates that a new catalog would be available, but fails to download it.

Best regards,
Karsten

Some Questions About A R710

$

I recently bought a used R710 and R610 that I am planning on using for my home recording studio. Each one came as a single processor maching with 4gb of ram. I would like to get the 710 going first as I need the extra PCIE slots for internal audio card and expansion board, and a video card. I opened it up and found that it was only a dual core Xeon (can't find it at the moment to give you a model number) and the 610 has the better quad core E5630. So here are my questions...

1. How can I tell if my R710 can use the E5630 processor?

2. Do I have to use ECC RAM?

3. Should it be buffered or unbuffered?

4. Can I use SATA instead of SAS drives in the unit?

As I said this is going to be used for my recording studio and will be running Windows 7 Pro for the OS.

Thank you very much for your time,

Burke

How to upgrade ram on Poweredge T410

Hi, i've got a poweredge T410 and i'm confused on how to upgrade the ram. it came with 2 x cpus and 16gb ram from new (8 x 2gb 2Rx8 PC3 10600E). so all eight slots are populated with ram. i've read loads of articles and still find it a bit confusing. I've got 2 new 8gb ram modules (8gb 2Rx8 PC3 12800R) which I would like to add but this doesn't seem to work in any of the slots as a pair. i've tried it in A2+B2, A3+B3, A4+B4 and A1+B1) and each time the system complains about a bad memory configuration and wont boot. please can someone advise on whether I can add these two ram modules to my current config and how? or whether I need to buy another two and add four to make it work? i've updated the bios too.

LSI MegaRAID in PE T630?

$

Does anyone have experience using LSI MEGARAID controllers in PE T630?

I am interesting in purchasing T630 without Dell PERC or Dell disks.  Then adding LSI MEGARAID 9631-8i + x7 200GB Intel DC S3710 SSDs.  RAID10, 3 spans + HS.

Trying to determine few things to find if this is even possible/compatible.

A.  Will Dell 16 2.5 bay backplane play nice with LSI controller?

B.  What kind of SFF connectors are Dell T630 backplanes using?  HD Mini-SAS SFF8643?

C. Will backplane drive bay LEDs work correctly off the HD Mini-SAS SFF8643?

T630 Manual does not provide information on the connectors.  All I've determined is that backplane must be using built in SAS expander as 16 drive bay work off 2 connectors from a PERC.  Manual is generic and calls "SAS Cable" yet diagram shows 2 connectors.  So assuming bandwidth is being divided here, but it still works well due to controller/backplane being rated for 12Gbps yet SSDs are 6Gbps.

4 Phy per SFF8643 x 2 = 96Gbps

16 x 6Gbps SSDs = 96Gbps

In the past I've always gone with Dell PERCs and 15K spinners.  Finally wanting to move toward SSD but not happy with Dell's present pricing on enterprise SSDs. So doing some research on other potential solutions.

Any feedback is much appreciated.
