Poweredge R610 Hex Core CPU Support

$

Hi All,

I'm looking for some tips on an issue I'm having with one of my R610's.  I upgraded two servers with identical new Hex core CPU's.  The first server booted up no problem and the CPU's read as expected in the management interface.

The second server wouldn't boot - just a black screen.  I was able to access the DRAC and the logs showed an error on both CPU's. So I re-installed the original quad core CPU's and it boots up fine.

Both servers are running the same (latest) firmware.  I reset the NVRAM on the server before I swapped the new CPU's out but still no good.

The only thing I can think of is that the servers have a different generation motherboard.  Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

JM

RAM Upgrade Recommendations for R620

Hi,

I've got a dual processor R620 server with 8x 8 GB RAM modules giving a total of 64 GB. I now want to upgrade the memory and have seen that the best module to buy (GB/cost) is the 16 GB part.

Can someone tell me what options I have?

Can I keep the existing 8 GB modules in the server and add in additional 16 GB modules? If so, what combinations can I add?

For example, can I only add 4x 16GB, 8x 16GB 12x 16GB or can I get away with other combinations?

Thanks for looking :)

PowerEdge 2800- driver issue, no drive found while attempting startup disk

Hi everyone- So let's begin with saying that I've taught myself everything I know through many hours of trial and error and online research.  There is much more to know than what I know now. Please share more "know" with me on this issue if you can and I thank you for your time and help.

We have an older Dell PowerEdge 2800 Server running Windows Server 2003 (Enterprise).  We started with an error that directed us to replace the RAM on the RAID array.  Did that.  Booted first time, Same error.  After that it went away.  However, new error from lsass.exe started and it would reboot after about 3 minutes.  So here's where I got stupid.  I don't have a Server 2003 Startup Disk because we purchase our servers through another entity who does the initial setup and they never leave the disks.  So knowing that lsass.exe is a problem I've seen in my lab I copied that file from a machine there (running Windows 7) and replaced the file on the server.  Annoying error about lsass.exe gone and no longer reboots :)  BUT now goes to a gray screen with no log in box!!!!! Shoot dang diggity.  Same in SAFE mode.  So now I go online to find a download and create a Startup Disk for Server 2003 so I can get in there and either do a repair or replace that file.  No love.  It says no drive detected after the disk finally loads everything.  Then I try using the driver files for my service tag #20B5M71  for all drivers listed in the following categories:

SAS Non-RAID (4 files)

and that didn't work. So I slipstream the above drivers available on Dell.com for this machine using nLite. Still same.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can get into this thing?  Can you point me to the specific drivers I SHOULD be installing to address the no drive found and is it better to go the floppy route or slipstream (some were only available as executable files that couldn't be added via floppy).  I teach full-time and manage our network on the side and I have to figure everything out myself.  It sucks not having someone to bounce ideas off and can take hours to finally find the golden ticket.  I'm in about 15 hours already with this thing because it's on another floor so I'm back and forth with boot disks trying to see if I've got the drivers it wants...  I am ready to ask for help.  Please. Asap.

PRODUCT CHANGED OR SERVICE TAG CHANGED

$

Hello all:

Recently, about 2 months ago, I had to check (query) a service tag status from a still operational server.   When I made this query at DELL.com  support section,  it reported me the correct server:

DELL PowerEdge SC1435  and the correct original configuration we bought from DELL

Today, due some external circumstances, I needed to check this same service tag again, on the same support pages, and it turns that I am getting a totally different equipment:

DELL PowerEdge 1950 and a different configuration, of course.

Why or how on earth the same service tag was ONCE assigned to one very specific (and physical product which I have in my possesion, as well as its purchase inoice from Dell),  and now,  it is assigned to a totally different product. ?   How could this happen?

Is it possible to track and get the history of a SERVICE TAG, from the time it was FIRST assigned to a specific unit of a product  ?   And,  the re-assignments it  has suffered across time (hopefully this does not happen) ?

In fact due to an incident, we are claiming the reposition of that machine, the one with the original service tag.  Now, it turns  the query returns a different model of equipment (and configuration) and thus, there are problems with discrepacies, as you probably can guess.

Any comments are more than welcome,   thanks in advance.

2321ds KVM port question

I'm attempting to manage my existing 2321ds over the network and am getting the following error

Login Failure

Reason: Connection failed, webserver did not respond or connection refused.

After getting a response on my ping, I attempted to connect through the browser to no response. I can use OSCAR to look at the switch and attached devices, but cannot connect through the Dell Remote Console Switch Software or trying to Configure Remote Console Switch.

My next move was to hyperterminal into the device, but can't seem to connect through the Setup port. The documentation says to use the "Configuration Port" , but doesn't show you which one to use or even tell you... like a big guessing game. I'd appreciate anyone's help on managing this device again to attempt at resolving my remote management capabilities with the unit.

Thank you.

Locating Faulty HDD

Ok, this is an old post but it answered many of my questions just reading it. I do need to know one more answer that is not listed here.

I have a RADI5 setup that was degraded. I put in a new hot spare drive and used the PERC300 software (CTRL+R) and setup the drive as a global spare successfully.

I then downloaded and installed the Openmanage software which showed to me that it was rebuilding my drive and it was almost done. That was great and it finished successfully,

I restarted and no longer received the 'degraded' message. All has gone well.

My first drive (0) and my 3rd drive (2) are both ONLINE. My 2nd drive (1) is READY and my 4th new drive (3) is SPARE. My initial error message started with 1----RAID5 Degraded Virtual Disk (R/W).

Here is my question: Now that there are 4 drives installed, how do I tell which one was the physically defective one? I would like to remove it from the system but I don't know where to go to identify it.

How can I ensure that the server is delivered to me with original parts assembled in Dell e.g HDD, memory....etc

Is there any link on Dell to validate that?

Appreciate your response,

Fitting DRAC 4/P to Poweredge 2800

Hi there,

I have found many sets of instructions on fitting a DRAC 4/i to the Motherboard of a Poweredge 2800, but none about fitting the PCI version, the DRAC 4/P.

I have an R200 at home from which I took it out of as I wanted to fit it to my work server, which is, albeit a dated model a workhorse and being re-juvenised with Ubunutu Server 14.04.1 LTS.

Does anyone have instructions on how to fit it as the management ribbon cable doesn't seem to go to anywhere...

Nic Firmware update Poweredge 1950

Hi. I'm trying to update firmware on PE1950 Win2k3 nics as advised by Openmanage Essentials. Model is Broadcom BCM5708C. I've downloaded and ran the Network_Firmware_NF92Y_WN64_7.10.18.EXE package, but i'm getting the following error:-

spsetup.exe - Unable to Locate Component

This application had failed to start because tbs.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

I guess the package doesn't support the OS. Any idea where I can find a package that either works or another way of updating the firmware

omreport on Ubuntu 14.04 (trusty) not working.

I use Nagios to monitor hardware state using omreport (via the check_openmanage script).

Since upgrading to 14.04 omreport can no longer see most hardware. For example:

sudo /opt/dell/srvadmin/sbin/omreport chassis volts
Error! No voltage probes found on this system.
sudo /opt/dell/srvadmin/sbin/omreport chassis temps
Error! No temperature probes found on this system.
sudo /opt/dell/srvadmin/sbin/omreport chassis fans
Error! No fan probes found on this system.

however it can find other hardware:

sudo /opt/dell/srvadmin/sbin/omreport chassis bios
BIOS Information

Manufacturer : Dell Inc.
Version      : 1.5.2
Release Date : 03/11/2013

sudo /opt/dell/srvadmin/sbin/omreport storage controller

Status                                        : Ok
Name                                          : PERC H310 Mini

Why have some of the chassis sensors stopped working? I'm using this source:

Perc 6i won't set to Write Back cache policy

$

Looking for ideas on why our Perc 6i won't set the cache policy for writes to "Write Back".

We have two logical volumes (one RAID 1 and one RAID 5) made up of Dell SAS drives.

According to Server Administrator, everything is green (OK). The cache battery shows OK.  The information screen for the Perc 6i shows it has 256MB cache, but for no good reason, the current cache policy is for writes is WRITE THROUGH.  When I choose WRITE BACK, it accepts the request (no error), and even the SA logs show command accepted successfully, yet the write cache policy is always WRITE THROUGH, and our write performance is terrible.

Anyone have any ideas how we can get our Perc 6i to set to WRITE BACK?

Thanks.

Black Screen

Dear Dell Community,

I am new to the dell community. Recently I procured a new dell r720 server with two intel xeon six-core processors, 64 GB RAM, 2TBx4 SAS HDD with PERC H710P and an Nvidia Quadro K2000 GPU. Since the day it has arrived we have been able to successfully install CentOS 6.6 OS and every thing seems to be working fine. However, I would like to know as how I should proceed with the following matter:

During boot when I see the dell logo and the progress bar on my screen, if I press the F2 key to enter the system options, I get a blank screen with a cursor blinking in the top left corner of my screen. The system stays in this state until I power it off by pressing the power button or restart the machine by pressing Alt+Ctrl+Del.

The same thing happens when I press the F11 key for PXE boot.

During boot when the system prompts to press the Ctrl-S key for network options and the Ctrl-R for RAID options, I can successfully access the network and RAID configurations.

If I insert a dvd and press no keys during the boot for accessing any options, the machine reads the dvd and I am able to install my OS.

Is there some setting which need to be made or is there a hardware fault. How can I diagnose this issue? I hope I have expressed issue clearly. If any further information is required please do not hesitate to ask.

Best Regards

Sohaib

I have some Dell R720 servers that i need to relocate to a new data centre.

how do I find out the server power rating(PF) so that I can calculate the total power of the rack that will be hosting the servers?

all the servers have 2x750W PSU.

we are planning to place 5x Dell R720 server and 1 x Equallogic PS6210x storage in the same rack with 4KVA power supply.

R730xd Flex Bay Backplane part numbers

We ordered a R730xd server with the 12 front 3.5" drives bays but without the rear flex bay populated and need to populate them now.  Our server did not come with the backplane or cables for the flex bay but it has the slots for it.

Our Dell sales rep have not been able to find the parts to upgrade the server to install the flex bay drives. Does anyone here have any idea what part numbers we need?  Or alternatively if the R720xd backplane and cables are the same?  I can find the R720xd backplane part # and it is 0JDG3 and the cables were 4NM23, 97J8N, 123W8 and KV109.

Poweredge T310 fans

I have a Poweredge T310 and I moved the mouse to "wake up" the server to set new backup schedules.  When I did so the fans started roaring I would say at least 75%.  The LED is saying the ambient temperature as been exceeded but the server is still pulling and blowing cold air.  I updated the BIOS and the firmware for the EMS.  When updating the firmware for EMS the fans slowed to normal for about 10 seconds and sped back up. I had replaced the motherboard and system fan both because I thought it may have been a bad sensor.  I'm at a stand still at this point.  Any other opinions?
