Trying to get Dell Repository Manager to work

$

For some reason, I cannot get my PE1950 to recognize my Dell Repository as a bootable image.  My PE2900 worked fine.  I have tried to put it on a Flash drive as well as a DVD RW. I tried to use the DVD in the Optical drive, as well as an external optical drive that I plugged into a USB.  Has anyone else run into this?

Poweredge 2800 Continuous Beep at Power Up

$

I'm new here, so if this is in the wrong forum, please let me know (or move it to the right place).

I recently bought a used PowerEdge 2800 rack mounted server with dual 3.6G Xeons, 12GB of RAM, embedded raid controller, two 146G 15K SCSI drives (which are probably empty), and both DVD and Floppy drives. There is no operating system, it's been out of actual service for some time, but seems to power up properly. I can enter the bios and RAID screens.

I have ZERO experience with servers; this is the beginning of my journey to learn. The problem I'm facing is that very shortly after powering on, it emits a loud beep. I researched POST messages, but the beep I'm getting isn't among them. The system give one long beep (maybe two seconds long), followed by an equal time of silence, followed by another equal length beep. I realize that I need to correct whatever is causing the error, but it's kinda hard to work on the system with it screaming in my ears.

Can anyone tell me what the system is trying to tell me, what subsystem is generating the beep, and, most importantly, how to turn off the noise?

Thank you in advance,

Tenaya

R320 + ESXi 5.5 PCI passthrough for telephony card

Hi All.

I need a bit of advice, please.

My server configuration is a R320 with VMWare ESXi 5.5 (free) hypervisor. The guest OS is CentOS 6.5.

I would like to install a telephony card for PSTN analog line tapping. Examples of such cards would be Sangoma A200 or Synway ATP-24A (PCIe cards).

I saw a page about certified passthrough cards and the list of certified cards is really small:

en.community.dell.com/techcenter/b/techcenter/archive/2013/11/21/vmware-esxi-5-5-certified-dell-poweredge-servers

My question is if I can expect such a PCI card to be detected by the guest OS. Any advice on this, please?

Thanks

Jorge

Dell PowerEdge T620 redundant power supply blinking orange

$

After I pressed F10 to run Dell Life Cycle, I entered dell ftp address and selected all updates in my new Dell PowerEdge T620 fileserver. It takes around 40 minutes then the server shutdown.

Now the server is not powering on and the two power supplies are blinking orange when they are plugged to power cords.

This indicates that both of the power supplies are faulty.

My question is when I get two new power supplies are there any precautions I should consider before fitting them on them racks?

Does the Life Cycle are still running and it will destroy the new power supplies as well?

Are there any method to interrupt the Life Cycle update process because I am sure that the firmware update is the reason of destroying my power supplies?

DELL PowerEdge 750 - Power Button part number

DELL PowerEdge 750

We are trying to find the part number of either the physical power button ( plastic bit )
or as we suspect it may be part of the chassis then we would need that.

It is not part of the control panel M4585/J1568 that has the switch - we need the bit you push ie. the assembly that has the board with the microswitch - we need the plastic bit that actuates the micro switch.

Could someone advise plesae.

R710 Largest Hot Swappable HD it will support

New to the Group:

I have a Dell R710 Server that I recently setup as a VM Host Server with 2 virtual servers running on it.  I initially setup the server with 6-300GB, 15000 RPM drives and I'm thinking that that will not be enough HD space and would like  to upgrade  to 6-1TB drives.  So I have two questions:

1: The controller inside this server is a PERC6II Controller Card (Dell Part No: T954J).  Will this support the 6-1TB drives that I would like to install?

2: Can I hot swap the 1 TB drives in place of the 6-300GB drives without having rebuild the whole VM environment from scratch.  I’m running VMWare VSpear Client ERE 5.5.

 Any assistance would be appricated.

 Regards

Ernie

reduce boot time in dell R620

Hello,

for reducing boot time in R620 I  have read in another post this solution:

"You can turn off the power capping option, which holds the cpu at the lowest frequency during post. You would use openmanage power center to do this. http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/dell-openmanage-power-center/pd

Turning off in system characterization in the bios misc settings will also help"

What is the openmanage power center? Is it a free application for managing the power of dell servers?

Are there any other actions that could be taken?

Thanks and BR/

r710 refuses to update bios

I have an r710 server that was originally resold by EMC as an avamar storage node but being re purposed to an esxi host.

I installed server 2012R2 directly on local disk and downloaded the system update utility iso. From there I was able to update Everything except the system bios. I was able to update the perc, the backplane, the drac, etc. When I attempt to flash the bios it instructs me to reboot and says "bios update attempt failed!"

The system has 1.1.4 bios currently. I tried going to the next step from there 1.2.6. I then tried 1.3.6, 6.3.0, & 6.4.0 direct from windows. I tried booting the System Build Utility from the drac and then switching to SUU iso. I tried dos bootable ISOs with all those bios versions. I wiped and reloaded the system with server 2008, and  I tried using the ufi utilities on startup. All result in the same error.

I am not quite sure how to proceed and I have been troubleshooting this for days. What am I missing?
Is there some sort of write protection jumper somewhere I am not aware of or something else?
I want to upgrade my e5504 cpu and don't have the microcode to support my replacement.
Does EMC require proprietary firmware? I saw no EMC branding other than a sticker on chassis.

PowerEdge R520...VLT0304 CPU 2 MEM VTT PG Voltage is outside range

Can someone please point me to the right direction.  I just upgraded my PowerEdge R520 Memory from 32G to 96GB using Six 16GB DIMMs (2Ranks with Speed 1600 MT/s).  Everything works great all day yesterday but when I came in this morning server box was down and reported the errors below:

error1: System board fail-safe voltage is outside of range.  Contact support

error2: VLT0304 CPU 2 MEM VTT PG Voltage is outside range. Reseat CPU.

So far I have done the following and no luck:

1) Disconnected AC power from box for 2 minutes.  Re-applied the input AC power and turn system on (did not work)

2) Reseated the CPU 2 (did not work)

Note:  I upgraded two machines.  The other box is still running without any issues (RAM Part #: SNP20D6FC/16G)

Please help

Thanks

R720xd Fans insanely loud, running full blast

$

My R720xd is running all of the system board fans at full speed continuously.

On powerup, the fans bump to high speed for a second, then settle down to reasonable speed, and stay at reasonable speed during POST, right up to the point where iDRAC initializes, at which point they all kick up to full speed, and stay there. From that point on, the fans go full speed. Nothing short of a reboot or shutdown will stop them.

I'm not exaggerating even slightly. The fans run at 17,000 RPM, 24 hours a day. It's so loud it can be heard through the walls on the other side of the building.

There is no OS installed on this machine.

I've upgraded to the latest firmware, tried changing the performance profile in the bios, and tried the whole hold down the power button while unplugged thing as well.

There's no possibility that it's overheating. Inlet air temp is 22 degrees, exhaust is 27, CPU temps are 35-40 degrees.

I've found other references to people having similar problems with R720s, but there doesn't seem to be any single common cause for it.

Any suggestions?

PowerEdge 4400 Service Manual?

Hello,

I recently have been asked to repair and upgrade a Dell PowerEdge 4400 server (Tag #BMWP701) that runs our business critical ERP system. In order to make sure I am using the correct parts and configuring it properly, I need to know all the configuration of connectors, pin outs, jumper settings, etc. This should all be described in the Service Manual.

I've scoured the Dell Support website, and searched through the ftp site, but I have been unable to locate it. Can anyone help me find it?

Please help me if you can!

Thanks in advance,

Jim

PowerEdge C2100 Internal drive controller

$

I have several C2100 units and decided to get the OS off the main drives(front bays) and utilize

the internal drives. I purchased the internal SATA drive cable which has two SATA connectors on one end and a single 'card edge' slot designed plug on the other.

I'm looking all around on the motherboard and the H710 card and cannot find where to plug the internal drives in. I'm starting to think there's some other sort of option that I need to get.

I was thinking possibly to use the onboard SATA drive connectors but there must be some sort of daughtercard that accepts the connector for the two internal drives.

Can anyone help with this? Possibly give me a part number, description, etc of what board I need to get?

Thanks a bunch!

Fabric mismatch on M620 w/ 10G on B

$

My M1000 system has two MXL (A1/B1) and 2 M I/O Aggregator (A2/B2). Nothing is in C1/C2.

My CMC reports A1/A2/B1/B2 are '10 GbE KR' which I believe is correct.

I have just installed some 10G cards 06ycp8 (which i believe to be Broadcom 57810s KR). Those blades will not come up, citing a fabric mismatch.

If i run getdcinfo, I get this. I'm not sure what 'PCIe bypass gen 2' means, but those 4 slots are the ones that do not work.

Can someone suggest what i must do? is the issue slot 3 & 5 (which are working, but only @ 1Gbps)? is the issue the new cards I have bought are not correct? There's very little documentation I can find, so pointing me @ it would be helpful. I understand these new cards to be KR, am I wrong?
