Packet Loss on PowerEdge R720 with Broadcom 5720

Hi All, This is not your usual sg3/ESX/Windows driver issue...... We have 4 vSphere 5.5 Servers running on the same hardware (R720 with On-Board Broadcom 5720s) and during a reboot the entire switch its connected to gets flooded and we experience huge packet loss to anything that is connect to the switch. After the Lifecycle Controller initiates (just before it boots to the OS), its fine and it's also fine within vSphere - never drops a packet. We have updated all Lifecycle controllers/BIOS's to the latest firmware, but nothing seems to resolve it - it also happens if the server is physically powered down but has power. This happens on all 4 vSphere boxes and it cannot be a fault with all 4 servers - anyone have any idea? or seen this before? Thanks

I have a DELL 3750W UPS - H925N with a management card in it but I don't know the password when connecting via RS232, SNMP has been locked/disabled, and I don't know the username/password when connecting via HTTP.

Is there any way to reset it to factory defaults?

Thanks.

Boot Failure after installing VMware ESXi 4.1 onto SD Card

Hi, I have a brand new R810 and I am trying to get VMware vSphere ESXi 4.1 onto the built in SD cards.  The installer finishes completely and I reboot the system and after the lengthy reboot I get a "No PXE-capable device available.  Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for system setup."

The SD cards are working just fine and the boot sequence has the Hard drive C: (Internal SD Card: Internal Dual SD) selected as the first boot device.  This system has no local hard drives, it is just to boot off of the SD cards.  This is not my first R810 system, but my first to exhibit this problem.  All my other R810's boot off of the Dual SD cards with no issues.

I disabled the PXE from the embedded NIC's.  The system also has two other 4 port ethernet cards in it.  It has a Intel Gigabit ET NIC, Quad Port (430-0657) and a Broadcom NetXtreme II 5709 Gigabit Quad Port NIC.  I don't see any way of disabling PXE capabilities with these nics during the system startup, so I am not sure if these nics are causing the problem or not.

Anyone have any issues on how to get this bugger booting properly?  If not, I guess I will have to engage Dell ProSupport this week to get it working.  I have never seen this problem before on all my Dell servers.

Thanks,

Sean

SATA power connectors

I have a powerEdge T310 with existing SATA drives and I want to add hardware RAID controller.  I choose the PERC H700 (which from what I read is compatible with the T310 and supports both SATA and SAS).  The connectors on the H700 are specifically SAS-8087 so I also purchased a SAS-8087 to 4xSATA convertor.

The problem I'm running into is that the current hard drives are powered by what looks like a 8pin EPS connector (I'm very new so I might not have the correct part - it looks like the following connector but has two red, two yellow, and 4 black connectors):

I'm looking for a part number that can break this 8pin EPS connection into 4 SATA power connections.  Is there any way to do this?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

It looks like there is an issue with our PowerEdgeT410.

It says ERROR 1 on the front panel but doesn't say anything more.

I've searched online and couldn't find what that error code means.

Thanks in advance.

Memory for C1100

Hello,

First I apologize for posting this in a PowerEdge forum; I cannot seem to find a more appropriate forum for my hardware.

I am trying to upgrade the memory in my C1100 in my home lab.  It currently has 36GB.  I would like to max it out while keeping budget in mind.  It looks like I have nine slots used with 4GB (DDR3 1066MHz)

My question is:  What are my options?  Which slots can I fill?  Are some of the slots off limits with this type of RAM?

Screenshots of setup:

Any advice is appreciated

M710HD will no longer boot properly

After applying a BIOS update task from OME the server restarted its self (as part of the update process, I believe) but will no longer boot any further than the dell logo right after the "configuring memory" screen. I can still connect to the iDRAC but no errors are shown. Is there somewhere I can look at logs? Is there anything I can try?

Out of 16 blades this is the only one I'm having issues with.

I've attached a screenshot of where it's stuck

Thanks

Completely random and maddening e1410 error

Trying to get an old 1950 (version III) set up with Ubuntu.  Specs (originally) were dual Intel E5440 Xeons, 16 GB ram, PERC 5i raid controller attached to 2 Seagate 73 GB 2.5 inch drives in raid 1 and 2 WD 2 TB drives in raid 1.  Installed Ubuntu version 14.04 with no trouble, rebooted machine after install completed and got first error - machine locked right after the Grub screen and scrolled the e1410 error on the front LCD.  Took off cover, checked cpu sockets for bent pins, anything like that, thought perhaps it was a fluke and booted machine again.  This time it booted normally.  Ran the apt updates on the machine, had to reboot again, got e1410 error again.  Decided to troubleshoot further by swapping cpus around to see if the error followed the processor.  Got error again on the same cpu so I said "Aha, it's a bad cpu socket!".  Swapped motherboard from another 1950, booted normally but again locked up once the OS had booted and was showing a login prompt.  Again showing e1410 on front LCD.  Thought that perhaps there actually was something wrong with one of the CPUs, tested both of them individually with the second socket empty - e1410 with both.  Thought perhaps ram might have something to do with it - swapped out different ram and same result.  Swapped in a third processor just on the off-chance that both of these processors had identical hardware issues at exactly the same time, shows the same error.  What's truly annoying is the error is completely random as far as I can tell - sometimes it will hang before the operating system even starts to boot, right after the grub screen.  Sometimes it will boot and run normally for hours within the OS and then lock up.  I left it running over night sitting on the BIOS screen to see if it was something OS related and it never locked up, but after that I rebooted it into Ubuntu and it's been sitting there for over 3 hours with no evidence of a problem.  I have done a lot of searching on this and I have found people have had this issue for reasons ranging from a bad raid controller battery to old BIOS versions to an apparently random interaction between their 3rd chakra and the 12th moon of Saturn.  Does anyone have a suggestion as to something other than a CPU, motherboard, memory that might cause randomly occurring CPU e1410 errors?

iDrac6 Enterprise for T310 K869T or J675T ?

I am looking to purchase an IDrac6 Enterprise card for a T310. Using Dell's website I cannot find the appropriate part so I am forced to look at resellers that appear to sell them.

The problem is that they quote different part numbers K869T and J675T. The images appear to be the same.

What is the difference between these two parts ? Which one is most suitable for the T310 ?

Preparing to move Power Edge 700 - precautions?

I'm getting ready to use a commercial mover to transport a Power Edge 700. What precautions should I take before putting it in a cardboard box, which will be put in a moving van, so the data and hard drive aren't trashed in transit? (I'm doing this to help a friend with limited technical skills; mine aren't a whole lot better.) Thanks so much!

Will 2950 run without the PCI riser card?

$

Not that I particularly want to do it this way, but I have to juggle a couple of PCI-X riser cards from servers in geographically separate sites. Basically the bulk of our 2950s came with PCIe risers by default, but I have a couple of PCI-X SCSI cards for two tape drives that I am trying to migrate to a couple of our semi-retired 2950s. It will be impossible to swap them in one session without a very quick 310 mile roundtrip. The servers that do have the PCI-X risers don't need cards at all, so if there is no major issue I probably wouldn't even bother putting the PCIe risers back in.

Also, does anyone know if there are any jumpers or configuration I must do to change the riser?

TIA!

Enabling Memory Mapped IO > 4GB has issues on R720

Hello,

We have a PCI card which needs to expose 2GB of memory to the host. When we enable the "Memory Mapped IO > 4B"  option in the BIOS, the system goes into continuous reboot cycles. When we disable it, the memory is not exposed as expected.

Could someone please help me to resolve this issue?

Thanks,

Hi there,

I am receiving the messages and errors below when trying to update the firmware on my Poweredge  R210 II server. I am using Dell Server BIOS PowerEdge R210 II Version 2.8.0 which appears to be the latest version for this BIOS but receive the following messages:

*red* Please do not remove the AC power !

Insyde flash utility etc

File loading 100%

Current BIOS Model name:

New BIOS Model name: PowerEdge T110 II

*red* Cannot use  a "PowerEdge T110 II" BIOS

*red* In a " "

*red* Rom update not performed

etc

I saw the following post for the server in the subject line which has the same message above and points to the server being an OEM box but I am able to open up a support page on the dell.com website using the service tag number on my machine. Any suggestions? Here is the post:

Many thanks.
