R420 chassis heating due raid controller card
hi
we purchased 6 servers from dell india.
we are facing a severe heating issue on top of the chassis above the raid card with all these 6 servers.
server configuration
R420 - single hexcore processor 2.2 ghz, 32gb ram
4 X 600 gb 15000 rpm drives
(configured as 2 drives in raid 1 + 2 drives in raid 1)
these servers are placed in a datacenter -- temperature is around 18 deg C
we are facing a severe heating issue at the on top of the chasiss just above the raid controller
when the servers are placed one above the other like they are normally placed in a datacenter the servers heat up between 50.4 - 57 deg celcius
dell support has changed motherboard, raid card , power supply etc of one of the above servers which is non-production (heating to 50.4 deg celcius) but the issue is not resolved
On closer examination of the raid controller card i noted that the fins of the heatsink on top of the raid controller card -- instead of being parallel to the airflow is actually perpendicular to the air flow and is actually trapping all the heat
the same card in a R620 server has the heatsink fins parallel to the air flow which remains cool
has anybody else in this forum noted this and are facing such a heating issue ?
could you please check this and let me know the resolution to this problem
can the heatsink be turned around by 90 degrees so that the fins of the heat sink are parallel to the airflow ?
thanks for your help

manuals /BIOS etc for a Dell DCS6005 3-node AMD server
Hi,
Maybe a desperate move to seek help here since the official support.dell.com has nothing about a Dell PowerEdge 6005 server. This is a -most likely- custom made server for a customer. It has 3-nodes of a Tyan S8208 motherboard. Two AMD2419EE cpus on each node. IPMI reports "DCS6005" as the FRU and a service tag that's not recognized by Dell.
Well, one of the nodes sends a continuous 'beep' when it powers on. No VGA console or IPMI console over LAN. So, I have no clue what might be wrong. Maybe a reset of the BIOS settings? (how?) Maybe re-flashing the BIOS? (how? I have no console!)
to cut a long story short, I'm helpless without proper documentation for *THIS* specific implementation.
Tyan re-directed me to Dell for manuals... But Dell doesn't post anything for this server (it does not exist :))
BIOS is AMI 1.09 and the management firmware is 1.03 (MegaRAC - Aster).
If anyone had the pleasure of finding any support documentation on how to bring these things back to life (or flash a new BIOS/firmware - if it ever existed). Please share. You'll do good :)
Thank you,
Thanos
Blade assistance
Hi all,
I am hoping someone may be able to help. Currently we use Dell r620 hosts and EqualLogic arrays. These run a VMware cluster.
I am looking at perhaps moving to a blade array system, as it will save us in many areas in the long run. I have been given different bits of info and unfortunately our Dell account management team are not providing any clarity.
My plan is to initially purchase a chassis, single blade and EqualLogic blade. Then we can expand rapidly. Discussing with someone at Dell they said that we could perhaps initially purchase the following:
- M1000e chassis
- m620 blade
- m8024-k switch x2 (IO in a1/a2)
- equallogic ps-m4110
From the info I have it looks like this would give 10gb to each blade and EQL. Further info indicates that these 10gb ports can be divided in to multiple links, which I could then do 8gb for iSCSI, 1gb for mgmt and 1gb for vm traffic.
The external ports on the m8024 would then be connected to our Cisco core using 1gb fibre connections, brought together via etherchannel or similar.
My query is if this kit list is correct and that this scenario would work? Also do the m8024 switches need to be linked together in this scenario?
Is there anything that I have missed?
thanks in advance

DELL R710 - 2 network cards out of 4, if active cannot be seen at the LAN
Hello All
I have a server R710 and it has 4 network cards on it.
I have deactivated 2 out of the 4 network cards that come from the manufacture and for the other 2 the configuration is as follows:
Network Card 1: 192.168.1.228 / 255.255.255.0, GW: 192.168.1.1, DNS: 192.168.1.224
Network Card 2: 192.168.10.8 / 255.255.0.0, GW: nothing. DNS 192.168.10.4
The thing is that if i will restart the server i cannot find it in the LAN. in any of the 2 LANS. I have to disable and then enable the Network Card 1 and after it can be seen to any of the 2 LANS.
I have another 4 Dell servers (3 R710, 1 R610) and that dont happen to them.
Any ideas?
Thx in advance

I have a T620 with one Perc H310 connected to the backplane.
In the iDrac when I go to storage I get the following error:

Dell PowerEdge 2950 II - Unsupported cpu combination System halted
I bought two new processors for my PowerEdge 2950 II and the place get the error below:
Unsupported cpu combination
System halted
The processors are the model Xeon E5440, socket LGA771.
The BIOS version is 2.4.3.
Using my Service Tag on the Dell site is available an update for my BIOS in version 2.7.0.
I wonder if this version really adds support to my processor.
Any risk doing this update?
Thanks,
Rodrigo Ventura.
Dell Power Edge 2950 with Dual Core 1.86ghz proc *2
I am trying to upgrade this server and after looking at CPU support it looks like this may take up to 3.16ghz Xeon quad core proc.
Can some one verify if either 2.66 Mhz or 3.16Mhz quad core CPUs work on this server?
i believe the originally FSB speed suggest 1066 Mhz
Cannot Install Windows Server on Dell T420
I have a Dell server and it was running as an EXSi server. I am in the process of reassigning it to be a HyoerV server.
Unfortunately, I was unable to install HyperV or Windows servers. I have tried Windows HyperV 2008, Win Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012.
The error "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing".
I have downloaded and burned multiple copies of the Installation CD from the MS website and can confirm it is not the CD.
I have upgraded the BIOS. I have not been able to update the firmaware as I havent figured it out.
I have seen similar problems on other threads but there solution was around the actual cd/dvd.
Any ideas on what is causing this issue?
Purchased Used Poweredge R710 - Came with custom firmware.. how can I reflash it back to 6.4.0
I purchased a Used Poweredge R710 today with no drives.
Turns out this was used for an arcsight logger.
Service tag comes up:
PowerEdge R710
Service Tag: HNV0DQ1 Express Service Code: 38448107641
I would like to flash the bios on this to get it back to factory settings.
I tried the R710-060400C bios executable, I get back this error:
Cannot use a Dell Systems PowerEdge R710" Bios in a "Arcsight, Inc - 7200 Series"
Press any key to exit..
And it dumps me back to my bootable usb.
Arcsight is now HP, and they haven't been very helpful.
How can I force this bios firmware to bring it back to stock.
Thanks
R
EDIT:
I found it - had to flash the bios with the /forcetype flag.
this can be closed.
T410, 'Press F1 to continue, F2 to enter setup'
Last week our PE T410 had a PCIE failure on bus 0 and reboot. It hung on 'Press F1 to continue, F2 to enter setup'. Dell came out and replaced the system board but it still hangs on 'Press F1 to continue, F2 to enter setup'. There are no error messages or reason for 'Press F1 to continue, F2 to enter setup'. If I press F1 it boot up normally.
The server has 4 x 450GB SAS drive and I think an S300 controller. There is also a DVD-ROM. When the server starts, it looks like a PXE boot attempt while it looks for a DHCP server. when this fails the POST continues.
Any suggestions?
Error code showing when there is not an error on PowerEdge 2950II
Dell Poweredge 2950 III not recognizing 32gb of memory
i put 8 sticks of 4gb in there and it only detects 28 gb

is this a bios setting or version issue?
