R710 not showing BIOS ver and acting weird after update...

Hi All,

I recently inherited two R710's with the same specs. Both were quite behind on their BIOS and firmware updates (one was using 2.2.x the other 3.0.0) so I thought I would be a good idea to bring them up-to-date.

Using the Centos boot disk I flashed them both with the latest 6.4.0 BIOS BIN file. Both seemed to update fine, but following the update the server that was previously on BIOS ver 3.0.0 is now not showing any BIOS version at all!!

By that I mean that during POST the Dell screen says 'BIOS Version' and then nothing. Also if I go into the BIOS menu, no version is reported. Nor is it reported in any of the Dell utils / iDRAC.

The same server is also exhibiting some other BIOS related weirdness:

- it will no longer go into the F10 LC menu - it just freezes while loading.
- Sometimes the Dell BIOS boot splash screen is corrupted. All I see is a blue gradient that starts half way down the screen.
- In VMware ESXi VCenter the server Make/Model is not reported.

I tried to rectify these issues by clearing the CMOS - no joy. Flashing the 6.4.0 BIOS again - nope. I also upgraded all other firmware (RAID, iDRAC, NIC...etc) - no joy here either.

Finally I came across the Lifecycle Controller Repair Package. I flashed this using iDRAC and rebooted, It did nothing at all!!

So now I'm stuck. The system boots fine and will load an OS, but I'm feeling very uneasy about putting it into production.

I've considered trying to flash BIOS 3.0.0 back onto the server, but I have no idea if you can downgrade the BIOS and have been afraid to try as even the BIOS flash tool does not seem to know what BIOS version I am currently on.

Does C6105 have built-in DRAC that can do remote media and GUI console access?

$

I'm used to having DRAC in older systems and had been assuming that this exists on pretty much every Dell Server -- but now I have doubts. Can any of you comment if C6105 (2U chassis with 4 servers in it) servers have the out of band management functionality equivalent of DRAC where I can mount ISO file and access the GUI console to drive a manual OS deployment?

Thanks.

PERC 6e battery showing degraded in Open Manage

I to am having this problem on 2 Dell PE2950's with the PERC 6e battery showing degraded in Open Manage .  Both machines are at most recent BIOS 2.70 and PERC 6e firmware level 6.3.3.  I have gone as far as replacing the entire chassis except the HDD's, so hardware wise nothing else to be changed.  I don't see how this can be OS problem.  Firmware is the only thing left.

Any ideas?

R520 Onboard Broadcom (5720) Teaming Doesn't Work in Windows Server 2012 R2

$

...but it did in Server 2012...

So, I bided my time and waited...and waited...for Broadcom to get around to releasing a version of BACS and driver software that actually works on Windows Server 2012 R2... Installed the driver update (16.2.0.4) and the updated version of BACS (16.3.4.0). NIC ports are detected fine and work individually. BACS launches and doesn't crash immediately. Yay! (or so I thought)

I attempted to create a LACP team using the two ports on the onboard. On the switch (a Cisco SG200-50 switch, running the latest available firmware version) I configured a LAG, added the correct ports, enabled LACP. The virtual team interface on the server, however, while advertising that it is up and running (confirmed in the switch UI), will not get an address and returns the dreaded "unidentified network" status in control panel. I've tried creating the team before and after having the LAG configured. I've even tried every possible combination of team type and LACP enabled/disabled without avail. The thing simply doesn't work.

I have a 4-port Intel I350-T (latest driver version from Dell) adapter installed in the machine. Using the Intel ProSet teaming utility, configuring an LACP-enabled team with a correctly configured LAG for all 4 ports works without issue.

Sadly, any logs I reference are less than helpful revolving almost exclusively around the fact that the adapter cannot get a DHCP address when initially configured.

Any ideas on this are greatly appreciated.

Dell C6100 Node No Longer Boots

$

A few hours ago, one of the nodes on a Dell C6100 4 node server stopped responding while I was actively working on it. After 5 hours of troubleshooting, here is what I have found...

- No video output
- Because there is no video output, the BIOS is not accessible
- Cleared CMOS, same story
- Reseated and shuffled all the RAM - nothing
- Ping / traceroute timeout

However, the node is receiving power from the backplane. The IPMI ethernet port's activity lights turn on as soon as the node is plugged into the chassis and the blue indicator light appears when the indicator button is pressed on the front bezel. When the power button is pressed, the HDD lights go green and it spins up but the eth0 port still shows no activity. Essentially, the server is receiving power but does not boot with no signs of error LEDs or beeping errors.

IPMI is accessible via the web however the event log only shows http://d.pr/i/pPK5 and power control via that interface fails as well.

IPMI firmware: 1.22
BIOS version: Not sure, can't access it

Is this a bricked motherboard that should just be replaced?

Just bought two identical R515 boxes. In one the FRONT USB ports are inoperative. I checked the BIOS setting during a restart and they are all enabled. The second box shows 4 USB Ports + 2 Internal USB's as well.

OS is Windows Server 2012. All patches applied.

Any ideas ???

Using the "system management tools and documentation dvd" I installed Windows Server 2008 R2 on myPowerEdge T1100. After installing the patches from the "windows update " restarted the system.
Windows did not start, and the computer fell into the loop of reboots.

Attempting to run "system services" ends with displaying the message "Entering System Servicesss ..."and "loop reboots" continues. I waited a few hours, detach the power supply etc.
Message disappears after the "Cancel System Services " in "BMC Configuration Uility" However, "Systemservices" does not start again.

I can not run the System Setup (F2 - key). The system displays only the message "Entering SystemSetup" and "System Setup " does not start.
The same goes for the F11 key, "BIOS Boot Manager "

How can I stop the loop restarts. Start the "System Services" or boot from dvd?

Please can some assist me.

Glenn

DRAC 5 Routing issues

Hi,

I have some Routing issues with my DRAC 5 on my T300.

Sometimes the web Interface is not reachable and also the ping is quite slow ~40ms. The strange Thing is, as soon as I diconnect the NIC from the Server, the DRAC is reachable all the time an also the ping is <1ms.

First I thought I missconfigured the DRAC but I already checked with the Guideline. It is set to dedicated and also the Network Settings are correct.

Any idea what could be wrong?

T605 Back Fan (CPUs) Running Fast

$

Removed my original 12 Gbs Memory (6x2GB Modules) and installed (dell) 4 Modules of 4Gb each.

System boots fine, recognize all 16 Gbs (8Gb on each CPU).

The Fan in the back never slows down, stay spinning at full speed, even when the Temp sersor are down to 39C on both.

If I replace with the old 12Gbs configuration of (6x2Gbs) the fans run at normal RPM, depending of the temp.

Anyone would have any clue?

I already updated the BIOS and a few other drivers available.

All seems normal except it sounds like the computer will take off at any time...

Thank You
