Dell PowerEdge 840

I have a PowerEdge 840 with 2 SATA drives inserted.  Both are blank drives.  When I power up the server, I eventually get to a point where I receive the message:

BMC Setup "Press <Ctrl-E) for BMC setup within 5 sec.....

Strike F1 to rety boot, F2 for setup utility.

I press F1 and I don't see anything unusual.  So, I escape and it eventually gets back to the same place.

Just prior to this happening the server was booting fine.  One of the other server tech's in our church (we are a small organization with volunteer support) removed the SAS drives that were in Raid 1 configuration and replaced them with SATA drives and he said he reset the SAS Configuration utility so that it would be RAID 0.  I am not familiar with the SAS 5 configuration utility so I don't know how to check if he did it properly but it seems unusual that this error now shows up after he made the changes.

How can I resolve this problem?

Thank y ou

VLT0204 system board voltage is outside of range

Hello everyone .

Can you please let me know exactly what happened with my server , we bought it 1 year ago

Last week, the Led indicator showed VLT0204 system board voltage is outside of range error. So we changed 1 PSU ( other one was changed 1 month before with  Power distribution board because Lost PSU Redundancy error ) and Mother Board. Then it worked nomally. But now, after 1 week led indicator show VLT0204 system board voltage is outside of range error again.

We don't want to take long time to fix this error. It's inconvenience.

We will contact to local Dell support, but i want to know what happened first.

thanks you

PE T610 update process

My old T610 need some TLC [H]

So i took it home then stripped down the hardware and cleaned out all the dust bunnies before reassembling everything back into a clean unit. Looked almost new but most imporantly it booted as expected.

I then installed more RAM, which after some to-ing and fro-ing, the system booted as one would expect with the new RAM being reflected within BIOS.

I also installed Windows server 2008 R2 by booting to a USB stick containing an OS install image and so got up and running without major drama. I then installed the Dell Chipset drivers followed by letting Windows Update do its thing. Lots of downloads later (and a some unexpected expense due to being on wireless internet) i'm patched and up to date.

Unfortunately i do have one 'unknown device' that may be associated with a 'Kernal-PnP Event ID 219 warning, failure name: \DRIVER\WUDFRd, data name: WpdBusEnumRoot\UMB\2&37c186d&0&STORAGE#VOLUME#_??_USBSTOR#DISK&VEN_HS-SD#MMC&REV_1.91#9&3af77b55&0&000000264001&0&#'. I'm not certain but this issue could be associated with my Dell U2711 USB hub, or it may not. But are Kernal-PnP warnings something i need to be concerned about NOW or can i safely ignore it for the moment and update my firmware?

As to firmware, my T610 is currently  in the following state (after updating PERC6 & HDD's):

Dell Server BIOS 11G:  6.1.0
Lifecycle Controller:  1.5.0.671
iDRAC Firmware: 1.80 (build 17)
OS driver pack:  6.5.0.12
Broadcom NetExtreme II firmware:  6.2.12
Dell 32bit diagnostics:  5154A0
PSU firmware:  08.13.00
Perc6/i firmware: 6.3.3-0002 (latest)
HDD firmware: ES68 (latest)

But i have read on some posts on this forum that that BIOS should be updated first followed by IDRAC. I've also read that IDRAC and LCC should be updated in lockstep. Unfortunately the BIOS and IDRAC release notes don't mention such prerequisits (post IDRAC 1.85). Odd also that the LCC release notes v 1.7.5 mention prerequisits for USC 1.6.5, iDRAC6 1.97 and BIOS versions for some systems but nada for T610 (even though this was downloaded from T610 page!).

So the Dell documentation does not seem to be linked well with prerequisits well specified so it's as clear as mud how one updates and doesn't end up with a borked system. Admittedly, i am now confused.

So where does one find the prerequisits specific to the allowable steps for each firmware component and what dependancies they have on other firmware components? Without such, how can anyone apply BIG updates and ensure they don't end up with an expensive brick?

How should i move forward with firmware updates?

As for the elephant in the room, i've read that some T110's have lost the ability to disable embedded video function within BIOS. This was not documented within the release notes. As i have a grahics card in my T610 server, is there any known issues with a loss of the 'disable embedded video' function within BIOS?

Also, as i previosuly had a client OS installed, management tools were not able to be installed. Now that i am trying a server trial OS, what Dell software should one install to allow local administartion (keeping in mind that i've only one server and not 100 scattered across the globe)?

This will be a .W.IP. as i've still to upgrade to 2x 6 core xeons and then tackle quieting down the fans..

Cheers [:)]

R520 iDRAM Brightness

Unfortunately, I didn't take care of this several years ago.  However, it has become quite annoying.

The iDRAM LCD screen is a very dark blue.  You can barely see some white text scrolling across it, but you cannot read it.

Is there a way to increase the brightness?  Or is there another issue to address here?

Dell T710 Added Memory 'Unsupported Memory Configuration/Not Optimal"

I recently added 2 - 16GB DIMMs to a T710 server, which already had 10 - 4GB modules installed. After reading the config guide and installing the 16 sticks, I'm getting this message:

My memory config as found in OpenManage is this:

Any ideas what's wrong? The memory is all recognized by the OS (all 72GB), its just saying its not optimal at boot, and also it requires you to strike F1 to finish the boot sequence.

PowerEdge 2900 won't boot to Windows

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2900.  The server will not boot into the OS.  There are no restore points to get to.  I can get to a command line by booting to an install CD and believe to verify that the file structures are still intact.  I cannot tell if the issue is hardware or software related.  I have tried various diagnostics and cannot come up with a way to boot into the OS (safe mode or other).  I have already tried the sfc command as well as bootrec.

Any advice?

I have a drac 5 card that has both pci and ribbon connectors from Poweredge 1950. Can I use this on Poweredge 710? 710 has idrac express only.

Can I use PCI connector instead of ribbons?

Thanks

I have a Gen II PE 2950, and was wondering if it would be possible to install a mSATA SSD on a PCIe card and boot from that device.  Has anyone tried installing an SSD this way and been able to get it to work?

Repeated Keystrokes in iDRAC Enterprise virtual console

I'm having the same issue many on the net have complained about, forever. Repeated keystrokes as I type in the virtual console (java). Replicated after doing an iDRAC reset too. I cannot fix it and I cannot do simple tasks like login (finally did after about 15 tries). I cannot do simple things like "ls", mount, etc. Even backspace deletes nearly the whole line. It's jittery and I'm hoping someone knows of a solution.

1. Please help me with a fix

2. Isn't HTML5 console possible?

3. How can I paste from my desktop into the console?

Supported Low Voltage Memory (PC3L) Configurations for PowerEdge T410

$

I'm noticing that when populating the first DIMM in each channel (i.e. 3 of the 4 memory slots per processor) with PC3L memory, it runs at 1.35V, as it should.

When I add a DIMM to the fourth slot, memory runs at 1.5V, thereby disregarding the low voltage benefit.

The T410 technical guide says "When operating at the lower voltage, additional frequency and population restrictions can take effect."  Is filling all memory slots considered a population restriction in this context?

Seems like a pretty common thing to do (filling all memory slots)...

I have been using T110 server for 6+ years and last night seems to have died.

When I tried to hard boot it this morning:

  • Blinking Amber light in the front
  • No Video
  • No Bios screen nothing
  • When I opened the box, I can see that Motherboard light is turned on.

What are my options? How can I troubleshoot and fix this?

French Connection - I will be installing equipment ordered from Paris into a Francophone-African country. I don't speak or read french.

In order to get my standard Dell M1000e hardware into said African country I found it best to order from a company in country.  This means that the M1000e and all components shipped out of Paris, and are waiting for me to arrive and build the blade system.  This includes:

3x M630 servers

1x m4110s Storage array

2x CMC

2x MXL (force10) switches

2x Poweredbe m6348 switches

Here is the question: Will all of the management interfaces be in French?  It seems a reasonable assumption to me.  Is there an easy way to toggle this to English?  I really hope so.  Please help me with this one.  I will be in country on Monday.  Thanks.

Supported RAM config of r815 - Dual Rank versus Quad Rank

$

Hello,

I am hoping to find a little more recent info on the supported RAM configurations for an r815.

The latest info I could find is this 2010 dated doc here:

www.dell.com/.../Poweredge-R815-Technical-Guidebook2010.pdf

According to this document, there are no supported RAM configurations employing Dual Rank 16GB DIMMs.  Specifically note the 256 and 512GB configurations which all call for either dual rank 8GB DIMMs, or 16GB quad rank DIMMs.

What I would like to know is this:

Is that a hardware limitation that persists today, or was that sheet a function of the type and size of DIMMs available at the time of publication?  Going to QR DIMMs means dropping RAM speed to 1066MHz, so there is a penalty to be paid for using QR DIMMs in any config.  Can anyone tell me with certainty whether this limitation still exists?

Thank you for your time!

SATA SSD in R710 Optical bay - power adapter

Hello Community

I want to install SATA SSD drive in place of DVD drive in R710.

Thought this would be straightforward but the combined power and data connector doesn't fit an SSD as the power connector is smaller than a standard SATA power connector.

Has anyone tried this and found a solution such as a SATA power adapter?
