Dell PowerEdge T20 : Hard Drives

Hi, I am going to build an MS SQL server for a small lab. I have chosen the Dell PowerEdge T20 server Spec1-T20-004 configuration. And I want to use two additional 5TB drives in RAID1. Since every document, i found from dell (including phone support) they only sell/support drives up to 3TB. I don't...

PowerEdge T410 Memory Upgrade Questions.

  • I have a T410 currently with a single Xeon CPU E5640. The second processor slot is empty.
  • I'm running VMWare ESXi 6.x with several Windows Server 2012 VM's
  • I have 3 Samsung 4gb 2r8 PC3l 1060R in memory slots (dual ranked, 1066 Mhz) in A1, A2, A3.

With this motherboard, there are three memory channels,

  • 0 which uses A1 and A4 together
  • 1 which uses A2
  • 2 which uses A3

I want to upgrade memory, preferably without replacing existing chips. I've read a half a dozen posts and haven't found a definitive answer. The hardware guide states these rules:

  • Except for memory channels that are unused, all populated memory channels must have identical configurations.
  • In a dual-processor configuration, the memory configuration for each processor must be identical.
  • Memory modules of different sizes can be mixed within a memory channel (for example, 2-GB and 4-GB), but all populated channels must have identical configurations. This applies to only channel 0.

Questions:

  1. Can I put an 8G dual ranked chip in the empty slot A4 for a net of 20gb? That would mean channel 0 = 12gb, channels 1 and 2 would be 4gb each.
  2. Can I move a 4gb chip from A3 to A4 and put an 8GB chip in A3? Channel 0 = 8GB, Channel 1 = 4GB, Channel 3 = 8GB
  3. Is there a configuration where I can add a single 16gb chip?
  4. In the future, I would like to add a second processor, I understand that the A and B configurations have to match, what is my best options for more memory, reusing what I have now and will purchase for the current memory only upgrade?

R710 Fans cycle

I have a R710, and I have not changed the setup since it was ordered, however the fans are constantly reving up and down from idle to full speed then back down, every 5-10 seconds. It is not giving off any errors. Ambient temp is running 22 C. I have made sure all firmware is up to date including the idrac and BMC.

R710 with added Perc6E causes fans to run fast

I need to add a Perc6E card to my R710 server.  When I install that card, the fan speed goes up substantially.  Maybe not 100% but high.  A fan utility I installed reports 6600 rpm.  The server already has the Perc6i installed.  I even tried removing the 6i and leaving the 6E, fan speed still too high.

If I remove the 6E, fan speeds return to normal (tolerable) levels.  The 6E isn't attached to anything (the drive array) yet, but in software it's recognized and I don't' see any errors.  Indications are that the card is OK as far as I can see.

I also have to add a single port SAS card for a tape drive.  No fan speed change on that one.

Any solution to this?  Is this normal?. Any way to troubleshoot without buying a different card?

PowerEdge R730dx FlexBay conversion problem

Hello.

as the subject says I am trying to convert a PE R730dx server that was originally ordered without flexbay support so I can use the flexbay for SSD drives.

last year I have ordered an R730dx with IDSDM module to be used for OS (MS Server 2012 R2  Hyper-V setup)

unfortunately  for the last several month I have been having a lot of issues with SD card and IDSDM module, to the point of DELL had to replace the module twice, an SD cards twice and even replace the whole MB as the server have been crushing left and right.

during the whole troubleshooting routine I traced the issue to be the incompatibility of OS with SD install. the SD cards and IDSDM module have been trashed to the point of failure  by Hyper-V install.

it is simply too much writes and reads for that setup.  maybe other Hypervisors are capable with running on SD cards byt it seams not Hyper-V. (amd yes it was a Hyper-V core install, no desktop or anything.)

after extensive back and force with DELL support reps, I come up with a plan to add a flex bay support to the enclosure. I found the parts needed and was assured by support reps that it will  work even if it is not officially supported by DELL sales team , ie. I could not order the parts via sales reps and need to go through replacement part division.  I got the parts last week and have a little issue.

all parts fit just fine except the SAS cable. PartNo:08RJM1.

the cable comes with a straight end connector on one end (go to the MB SAS port ) and angled connector on the other(go to SAS connector on the flexbay back-plain )

the angled connector is does not fit as it is blocked by a square 1" x 1" stand off on the chassis.

looks like it is where the lock for the  chassis cover is.

I know that there is a configuration for this server that supports flex bay. and even my search for it returns the same part number for chassis on both configurations.

so how is it that on the officially supported setup it works and on my it is not?

please help.

Poweredge R710 boot to x64 exception - how to solve

$

I'm trying to figure out how to get past the X64 Exception Type: https://imgur.com/a/7yoty

Currently I have no HD or OS installed. These are the server details:

Dell PowerEdge R710

BIOS 1.2.6

idrac6 1.20.01

idrac config utility : 1.33

Initializing UEFI please wait: then the x64 exception type

I made a USB drive with a BIOS update, but I can't find an option to boot to Bios. there simply isn't any option when I see the Dell Logo. https://imgur.com/a/ycmBq

In system services, I have

--- set BIOS sequence to boot to my USB drive first

--- set my USB drive Emulation Type to be "Hard Disk"

When booting up, I'm not sure if it's booting to the USB drive. I don't think it is because I just keep getting the same error.

Basically I need to get this server working without installing a hard drive or OS. Client will install himself.

Any ideas is appreciated. Thank you.

PowerEdge R620 disable intrusion alarm

Hello, we have a Dell R620 that keeps complaining about a chassis intrusion. This machine is safely locked up in a data center and nobody is near it. We'd like to just disable the alarm altogether, but can't figure out how.

Reading here and other places online, there are several references to going into the BIOS in the security section and disabling the chassis intrusion there. But on this system with the latest BIOS, there is no chassis anything in the security section of the BIOS.

Any thoughts on how to do this on this system?

Thanks

Problems updating BCM57810 to current firmware on M620

We have a M620 blade in the M1000e chassis.  We have updated BIOS, iDRAC, (just about everything but the 10Gb NICs) through the FTP inside the LifeCycle Controller.  All went well but these cards.

They are currently version 7.2.20 and the update manager through the LCC is suggesting 8.07.25. I have used the SUU, and the FTP - neither has been able to update these.

Any suggestions would be great!

Hardware interchangeability between m710 and r710

Hi Guys,

I have a few PowerEdge m710's with high spec Hex Core CPU's and 16GB DIMMs that are no longer in use.

Would it be possible to take the CPU and RAM out of the m710 and put them into a r710? I checked the specs for both servers and they seem to work of the same chipset.

I would just like to double check before buying a few r710's.

All three Bank B memory modules show Critical Status

$

Recently I found my Poweredge 1850 locked up. Black screen. After powering off the server and restarting it, I was informed that there were memory errors. I was able to boot the server successfully, then I used OpenManage tool to check out what was going on. OpenManage showed that 3 of the memory modules were in Critical mode. Oddly, every one that was Critical was on Bank B.  I don't know what the odds of that is, but I'm pretty sure the odds of 3 bad out of 6 total modules, all occupying Bank B, is pretty slim.

I then turned off the machine and replaced both DIMM3A and B. I rebooted, and again, I'm warned of memory issues. When I checked OpenManage, once more, all of the Critical status modules were reported to be on Bank B.

Again, what are the odds?

Does anyone know what all of this is telling me regarding the server?

PE2950 has a 1229 LED code

Hi all,
I have a PE2950 that has won't boot and has an LED error code of 1229.

It's been rock solid for years up to this point.
I've found out this is a CPU # VCORE Regulator failure but that doesn't help me much.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I've seen advice advising to re-seat the processor......yes?

Or is it likely that this server is kaput and destined for the landfill?

Thanks.

We have R620s running ESXi for our VMware enviroment. Each server currently has an Intel x520 with (2) 10gb sfp+ ports and (2) gig ethernet ports. Each server also has a Broadcom 4 port gig ethernet card. Can I swap out the Broadcom card on each server with another Intel x520 so that each server has (4) 10gb sfp+ ports and (4) gig ethernet ports?

Thank you.
