Factory Defaults R710s

Hi, I've been given the task of resetting a number of R710s,

which is the best way of erasing\resetting all user settings\data on them, i've removed the drives and sanitised them with a data erase program, but what about the servers?

i've gone into bios and used the scroll lock, num lock, cap lock, and ALT keys combos  that are suppose to reset the nvram and restore factory defaults,

but what about resetting the LC and iDrac to factory defaults, which will delete all iDRAC user credentials and IP address configuration settings also it would delete all the lifecycle logs that contain the history of all the change events, firmware upgrades, and user comments.

would you advise resetting the LC and iDRac and if i do will it cause any problems when the servers are used by someone else?

thanks for any advice..

Jon.

PRODUCTION server with CPU speed 0.15 or 0.17---PowerEdge R720 -Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2620 v2 @ 2.10GHz,

Hello,

I have an interesting issue on a production servers used for a SharePoint farm. It worked OK for almost 1 year, but on the last 2 days are only issues related to the CPU speed.

Processor Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2620 v2 @ 2.10GHz, 2100 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s)

The machine is very slow at this moment and it was restarted for times already. I do not have access on the server to check the BIOS for CPU throttling. I can login only remote.

Any ideas?

New-to-me R710 will not boot - gets hung at splash screen

Good evening,
I have a "new to me" R710 in my home lab. It's one of those great used ones from eBay.
It has 2x E5520 Xeons and 18x8GB DIMMs, DRAC6 Express, PERC6/i (no local storage other than a thumb drive).

The DRAC firmware is 1.98 - this appears to be the latest available.
The BIOS version is 6.4.0.

Upon booting the system, it just hangs. I don't even get the option to press F2/F10/F11/F12. I have attached a cell phone shot of the screen it hangs at (I call it the splash screen, not sure if it has an official name - is this before, during or after POST?). Even at this screen, the DRAC is responsive. It shows no errors on the webUI. The LCD screen also shows no errors.
Here is a list of all of the things I have tried:

1) Updating the DRAC firmware - this did not help. It was already 1.98, but I thought there may be an issue with corruption, so I went ahead and tried this.
2) Pulled all hardware EXCEPT for: CPU1, DIMM A1 - this did not help. I tried different DIMMs and the 2nd CPU from CPU2, but it still hung.
3) Pulled both power supplies and swapped them with known good ones - no change in behavior
4) Tried just one power supply - LCD properly complained about lost redundancy, but no boot
5) Just let it sit at this screen - I have tried intervals of 30 and 75 minutes, but it just sits there
6) Clearing NVRAM - the manual says to let the system "boot" to complete this. Since I never get a full boot though, I let it get to the splash screen, let it sit for about 15 minutes, then placed the jumper back to standard position.

While it's stuck on this screen, the keyboard is non-responsive. Numlock won't turn on, Ctrl+Alt+Del does nothing.
However, I can access the DRAC via web browsers. On there, it reports no errors. All voltages, fans, power supplies etc. all report with a green check mark, and the numerical values are in-line with normal. The Post Code it shows it:

0x40
Display sign-on

So, at this point, I'm very very stuck. I'm hoping the Dell community can give me an idea of something I haven't already tried. I assume the seller will help since this is effectively DOA, but the hassle of shipping this back and a new one out to me is not something I look forward to at all...

Occasional Beep from Dell PowerEdge T630

Hi All,

I've got a new Dell PowerEdge T630.  We are getting an occasional (few times a day, with seemingly no pattern) beep from the server.

I'm pretty sure the beep is followed by individual drive lights firing up on the raid array (3 x 1 TB with PERC H730 controller).  But I haven't caught it enough times to be sure about this yet.  So I think it's related to the drives somewhere!

Does anyone else have any experience with this?  I've looked through the event logs for the server but can't find anything obvious, have tried to find RAID logs but no luck as yet.  Any help appreciated here also.

Thanks in advance for any help forwarded.

Memory Configuration - Mixing Memory

Hi,

I have an R710 that contained existing 24GB RAM (2GB DIMMs) from Samsung (part# below).

I purchased new 64GB of Crucial Memory and thought I would be able to combine them to get 88GB.

I am having a tough time combining different memory but I am not sure why it wouldn't work.  I understand that I should be able to mix and match sizes and speeds.  I thought I followed where they should be installed and I tried every combination and made sure they were balanced across both CPUs.  No matter what I tried they just would not work together.

I even tried putting in the 64GB of new RAM and just try adding 4GB of the old RAM but would still not work.

This is what I have:

12 x 2GB: Samsung M391B5773CH0 - YH9 (2GB 1Rx8 PC3L)  (Original Memory)

I wanted to grow the memory so I purchased Crucial Memory.  An additional 64GB.

4 x 16GB: Crucial DDR3 PC3-12800 Registered ECC 1.5V 2048Mx72

thanks for any help.

PowerEdge R720 – Front LCD panel completely dark

We did something that has apparently turned off the front panel LCD display and Power light - The server is up and running normally, just no lights in the front (except for the blinking HHDs).  And pressing any of the 3 panel buttons -- left arrow, select, or right arrow does not do anything.

I have been trying to search the web, but can't quite get the right search string to help me find the answer...but I did encounter this bit that seems to make sense, unfortunately it doesn't say how to turn it back on.

...the LCD backlight will remain off if the LCD messaging is turned off; this can be done via the web-based graphical interface, IPMITOOL, Open Mange System Administrator, or a command line too such as RACADM.

Anyone know how to turn this option back on?

Dell PowerEdge R710 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 720

I have a PowerEdge R710 with Windows 2008 R2 and installed a NVIDIA GeForce GT 720. The Windows drivers appear to have installed correctly, and all looks good in the device manager, but I have 2 problems.

  1. I cannot get a signal either digital or analog from the card to the monitor
  2. Windows 2008 still appears to be using the built in VGA adapter

Is there a jumper on the motherboard that disables the built in adapter and enables the PCI Ex8 card, or a BIOS setting? Or is it just incompatible? Although that would be odd as Windows recognizes the card and installs the drivers without a problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Successor to the Dell T110 II, is anything on the road map to replace the T110 II?

$

Is there anything in the pipeline to replace the PowerEdge T110 II for SMB customers?  Something with lots of SATA 3 port, USB 3.0, and more than 32GB of RAM I'm hoping...does anyone have any inside info?

Is my 2950 Gen1 or Gen2?

So, I cant figure out what gen is this, what source of info should I trust?

The chassis does not have any markings like II or III, which would mean Gen1. But then, both DRAC and OpenManage say that the system revision is II, meaning Gen2. Also the list of parts in the machine in OpenManage shows the board number and google shows its Gen2. maybe the motherboard is swapped in it?

Should I trust to DRAC and OpenManage that it is Gen2 so its able to upgrade to 5300 series Xeons, even when chassis has no markings.

VRTX - Updating NICs firmware

I might be missing something obvious, but I can't figure out how to update the firmware of the chassis-attached NICs on a VRTX.

Mapping a NIC to a blade and trying to update its firmware from the blade's iDRAC doesn't work (it does put a job in the queue, reboot the server and go as far as the update screen, but then fail).

And there's no "update" tab on the CMC interface for PCIe components (there is one for the storage components, so I was kind of expecting something similar...).

Any idea?

NICs are Intel I350-T4. Current firmware is 15.0.27. Target firmware is 16.0.24. Everything else on blades and VRTX chassis is latest version, AFAIK. This is an Express CMC license.

PowerEdge M1000e and Dell FX2

Hello - I am looking for some process input\ direction into migrating from a PowerEdge M1000e to a Dell FX2.

Our PE 1000e has 3 M610s and 1 M520 blades with VMware 5.0 on each.

We are also moving from a PS4000 to a PS6100x SAN.

I am clear on the SAN migration part (ie. Upgrading the Firmware'  etc.) but I am unsure as to how to migrate from 1000e to the FX2?

Once the SAN is migrated from the 4000 to the 6100 would we simply load VMware 5.5 on each of the FX2' 4 Blades and connect the FX2 to the 6100x using iSCSI?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

M1000e IP Address requirements?

M1000e networking question

We have ordered an M1000e chassis. We are using (2) Dell Force10 MXL blade switches for networking. My question is that the MXL switch comes with 2 QSPF+ ports. We also ordered (1) of these (SFP+ 10GbE Module, 4 port, Hot Swappable, 4x SFP+ ports (optics or direct attach cables required) (331-8187)) . WE only got 1 but we want redundancy. My question is can I use a QSFP+ breakout cable which has a 40GB connection on the MXL switch end and use 1 or 2 of the 10GB SFP+ cables on the other end into my Cisco switch? WE do not have enough 10Gbps ports at the moment to use all 4. I'm not sure if we need to use all 4 10GBps cables or can use 1 or 2 and grow into all 4? We are thinking of just returning the 331-8187 and using the breakout cable.

Hello Dell Community!

We're just having some issues in upgrading the RAM of our PE T310 server. The system has 8GB and we want to add 8GB more. OS is Server 2008 R2 standard.

New RAM: Samsung M39B1K70BH1 p/n: 43X5056

System is not booting up every time we put the new cards.

Note: We're not mixing up the old and the new cards.

Any advise please :)

How do you disable RAID 5 in Dell PowerVault NX300

$

We have an old test server that we were not aware that is set to RAID 5. We took out the hard drive and then we put it back in and windows would not start. We see an error about virtual disk and that is how we knew that the server is set to RAID 5. How can we set this server to use a physical disk and not use a virtual disk? We do not see an obvious way to disable it in the RAID controller (when you CTRL-R).
