We just received in 3 x Dell PowerEdge 2950 and 5 x Dell 1950 servers that have passwords on them when they boot up.  I am looking for some help on how to reset the units to factory default settings.

Any help would really be appreciated.

Brand new Dell PE R520 and R720 - hyper-v network not working

Hello,

Recently we buyed Dell PowerEdge R520 and R720. We flashed all of the firmware to the newest from Dell support site. After that, we install Windows Server 2012 R2 with hyper-v role. Also, we installed the newest drivers. The servers are running fine, except the virtual machines - they have no network access. The NICs are Broadcom NetExtreme Gigabit Ethernet.

We tried everithing - with and without NIC Teams, old drivers, new drivers from Broadcom site and etc. Also we turned off Virtual Machine queues and still no result.

Can someone help us?

Thank you in advance!

What happened to the Guidebooks for the 13G Servers?

Not sure how many folks out there used the technical guidebooks but at my company we have the technical guidebooks gooing back for 3-4 generations. These are outstanding references and have provided extremely useful documentation. In particular during the initial setups as well as later on when deciding to upgrade servers it's worth it's weight to help you determine memory configurations, and slot priorities.

I truly hope that the guidebooks are just delayed and will be made availabe soon! Hopefully Dell has not decided to stop making these available, as to do so would just make it more difiicult for the system administartors and eventually end up creating longer outages and require administrators to tie up time from the Dell support technicians.Quite often our technicians use the pictures to reference motherboard layouts.

As a company we generally download these documents once and maintain them on our SharePoint sites so that we have them locally. Hopefully others will chime in if they have more information.

Thanks...David

PowerEdge T630 Video Card Power

I have a new PowerEdge T630 and I need to install a new AMD video card (XFX R9 280). How do I access the power supply? The GPU fits just fine, but it needs power as well :)

Is there a GPU kit needed?

The power cables seem to be underneath the the motherboard. Do I need to remove the motherboard to access the power supply?

Thanks,

ESXi only seeing single NIC with M710HD blade NPAR NIC partition configured

Have some older M710HD blades that were retired from production and currently redeploying as a sandbox environment.  Since they were a big behind, all the firmwaer was updated on them including the NIC (Broadcom BCM57712).  An older version of ESXi was running on them previously with 2 NIC's partitioned for a total of 8 virtual ports.  Reinstalled them with a later version of ESXi, and about half the blades are showing the 8 virtual ports, but the other half only show 2 NIC's and are not recognizing the NIC partition settings.

I suspected the FW upgrades might have wiped the NIC configuration.  But going into the Broadcom NIC BIOS (CTRL+S) and the multi-function node shows the NIC is already configured for NPAR.  Also went into the UCS menu which also shows the same settings.

What am I missing?

Whether to upgrade away from old PowerEdge 2600 system

Value question:

I have installed a PowerEdge 2600 system that was shipped to me in September of 2003.  The CPU specs are -2- PROCESSOR, 80532, 3.06GHZ, 512K, 533FSB.

Its currently running Windows Server 2003 and has run perfectly as a production web server for 11 years.  I have no concerns about its performance level or capacities.  Its running RAID, I have spare disk drives and a power supply on-premises so I am not really concerned about hardware failure or longevity.  I am now considering redeployment of this machine and whether or not I should keep it or replace it with something more modern.

My specific questions:

1. Will I have any problems getting it to run Windows Server 2012 R2?   Any other software compatibility I need to worry about with such old hardware?

2. Ought I be concerned about it's power consumption/electricity cost compared to more modern servers?  It seems like it sucks a lot of juice.

3. Can my CPUs be upgraded at all if even to gain just a slight performance improvement?

4. Should I regard my PowerEdge 2600 hardware platform to be "that good" and "that industrial strength"  that I should consider keeping it for another 4 year cycle rather than moving onto another box?  i.e. would moving to another box of "equal stamina and strength" be so costly that it wouldn't be worth the investment?

Many thanks in advance,

Dan

Hi,

Can anyone recommend any 16GB quad-rank DIMMs for a Dell PowerEdge T710?

I currently have eighteen 8GB quad-rank DIMMs, and I want to swap nine out for 16GB DIMMs.  However, as per Chris' advice in:

en.community.dell.com/.../19591170

I need to make sure all the DIMMs are quad-rank.

Any recommendations?

Many thanks,

Hello,

I need an memory upgrade so I found the proper memory in my local shop. Now I have 8GB so I want to buy 2 x 4GB or 4 x 4GB if current memory occupies more slots.

Does anyone know if GOODRAM 4GB DDR3 ECC 1333MHz W-MEM1333E34G is compatible with this server?

Recurring MEBx / AMT / KVM problems on brand new Poweredge T20s

$

I've purchased and configured half a dozen Poweredge T20s, but have run in to a problem on the latest two.

Although I'm able to get in to the MEBx menu locally, by hitting Ctrl-P during boot, and configure everything properly, I still can't get the remote KVM to work.

I can properly access the WebUI, and I can connect to the T20s with Manageability Commander properly, as outlined in the articles appended at the bottom of the post.

However, the Remote Desktop option is permanently set to Disabled. I can't change it.  There's no setting to enable it in the MEBx menus or in the Web UI, and I have no idea why it would be spontaneously disabled on  these two boxes and not the other 4 I've configured.

My hunch is that Dell has somehow disabled it.  One of these two T20s, I actually had to have a tech come replace the motherboard because I couldn't even access the MEBx menu.  It had been (inadvertently?) disabled at the factory and Support didn't know how to re-enable it.

Has anyone else run in to this issue?  How did you get around it?  Dell, is there some 'secret' factory-configured setting that disables this feature?

E1000 MISCONFIG Call Support in LCD display

We have a PowerEdge 6800 that was taken out of production about 2 years ago.  It hasn't be powered on for about 1.5 years.  Now we want to use it for a test setup, but when it is powered on it shows a E1000 Misconfig error in the LCD display and the fans power down.  The power light blinks and the Message on the display remains.  My research shows a that the VRMs are misconfigured or incorrect.  I have tried reseating them.  Any ideas?

Thanks,  Bob...

ADD New VD(HDD) in Perco H710

I need your Help, may be somebody knows

I have the Domain server Dell R420 with Perco H710 controller. And there is 1 Tb HDD inside. It is in RAID 0. System working and starting from here.

I Added 3 Tb more and need to set it. 3 TB HDD don’t determined by OS.

I thought that I need to create a new one Virtual Drive in RAID0 to set new HDD, BUT

I am afraid to damage system on 1 Tb, cause I never do it before.

My question: if I’ll add a new one Virtual Drive in Raid Controller (Dell Perc H710) for new HDD, and I’ll set it, there is no any data lost ? Can I add second VD, if it does not entail any consequences associated with the data loss on the first ? First drive is RAID0, second Drive i want to add for archiving. What RAID i need to choose, cause I put new HDD to server it has determined, but system not see it

Whaen I am Going to F2 menu and creating new VD, I  chose new HDD 3 Tb and set RAID to 0. I think I should be to do it so

Since I'm doing this for the first time, I want to consult.

Dell PowerEdge Server ESXI server hangs

$

Hello, we have been troubleshooting an issue where our Dell PowerEdge servers running ESXI 5.0, 5.1, and 5.5.

Our current configuration is Dell PowerEdge R720's with 256GB of memory, internal 4 Broadcom NICS 2 dual port

Intel nics.  The servers are connected to a Dell Compellent SAN using Cisco Nexus 5500 network switch.  What happens is that intermittently one of the ESXI servers will hang and none of the virtual machines will be accessible.  None of the virtual machines will failover to other hosts and at times not even the IDRAC is accessible.  We cannot do anything with the host in Vcenter and have to power cycle the host.  Once we power cycle the host all the virtual machines will come up on the other hosts just fine and after the power cycle we can move virtual machines back to the original host with no issues.

This issue occurs on our R720's here in the US and our R610's in the UK.  We have worked with VMware, Copilot, and Dell to try and resolve this issue but have had no luck resolving this issue.  The only thing that is visible that the VMware logs show that there was a loss of connectivity to the Compellent storage, but when we experience this issue we have seen losses of other network connectivity and it appears that the Vmotion network fails since none of the virtual machines failover to the other hosts.

Here is a list of some of the things we have done here in the US to try and resolve this issue.

Originally we were running R620's running ESXI 5.1 using Broadcom 10GB nics to connect to the Compellent Storage.  We were using the Dell OEM version of ESXI.  VMware had us update drivers to the Broadcom nics which did not resolve the issue.  We also applied updated firmware to the R620's, this did not resolve the issue.  We applied all the VMware updates which did not resolve the issue.  After this we changed out the R610's with R720's switched to Intel NICS for the ISCSI and production network connection and installed ESXi 5.5 with the newest firmware and drivers available and we are still seeing the same issue.

Has someone had this same issue and were able to resolve it?

Thank you,

Richard Tracy
