R720 Scrambled Display
I powered on my R720 after 2 months (it was also unplugged from the mains) only to find that the fans are spinning at full speed, front LCD panel does not work (is dead) and output via both front and back VGA is scrambled/corrupt from the BIOS screen onwards. It does not even get to the OS.
Scrambled display output:
Before all of this happened, the system had the latest firmware and bios updates as of September.
Troubleshooting steps:
-Reseat all raiser cards
-Reset BIOS via jumper
-Reset BIOS via taking the battery out
-Reconnected LCD panel board cables
dell utility partition R620 poweredge
Hello,
we are installing some R620 dell servers with sles 11 autoyast.
After the OS installation some of the servers have a dell utility partition but others don't have it.

Who is creating this partition? Why some servers have it and others doesn't?

Xenserver 6.2 install on R720
I am new to Dell HW and was wondering if the Dell Utility Partition is required? I ask because the XS 6.2 admin guide states that if the Dell Utility partition exists then the disk will be formated using DOS formating instead of GUID. The CO. wants to only but 6x 600gb disks and format it with RAID5 and partition it. Not my recommendation.
Thanks

Dell Power Edge R320 - Windows Server 2012 R2 - Hyper V - High CPU Utilization - Performance Per Watt
Dell PE R320
Windows Server 2012 R2
Hyper-V Role w/ 4 VM's
IDRAC 7 / BIOS Version 2.3.3
1) Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2420 v2 @ 2.20 GHz E5 220 MHz
Issue/Symptoms: System online in production approximately a month. No issues during that time. One morning we received SCOM alerts on high CPU. Upon investigation, the Hyper-V Host CPU was averaging 25% with spikes to 50%, the VM's CPU average 80% spiking to 100%. Memory is not an issue on either Host or VM's. No system changes were identified. System performance severely degraded, users report slow access to network shares, users directories.
Troubleshooting: Rebooted (several times), upgrading NIC Firmware/Drivers, uninstalling McAfee, Backup Exec and the SCOM Monitoring Agent with no results. We were leaning towards it being a VM issue on the host so we opened a case with Microsoft. Throughout 10+ hours we supplied traces using Perfmon, Process Explorer and XPerf which were all inconclusive. It was grueling getting the traces and reports to complete because of the degraded system performance.
Resolution: Logging into the IDRAC, booting to the BIOS, select System Profile, change the profile from Performance per Watt to Performance.
Immediate results... Hyper V Host CPU dropped to 0% - 4% average. It was like a new system.
The posts in this forum by user "LSLC" assisted immensely towards a resolution.
Replace H310 with H710
Hi there!
We're running VmWare ESXi Standard (so no HA), and we've orderer a Dell R720xd for that purpose. We described our requirements, but Dell technician recommended a H310 and it turned out to be a bad recommendation as our IO is not satisfactory. So we finally got Dell to replace H710 instead of H310 (we'll miss H310s ability to handle non-raid HDDs though), but I need to perform the upgrade myself.
I've read this thread here:
en.community.dell.com/.../19482144
Power down
Remove H310
Insert H710
Power Up
Import [foreign] configuration (if necessary)
Done
so I just wanted to ask if this is really all that is to it.
What confused me was this video here:
blog.osmicro.org/replace-dell-perc-h310-h710-without-losing-data
where there is some more action taking place (in Windows?!).
Any way to have a non-raid drive in R720xd ?
My previous post was about replacing H310 with H710, so since that means dumping the non-raid funcionality of H310, that means now I need to check if there is a way to have a non-raid SSD drive in R720xd server. We also have T610 which has regular SATA connectors on the mainboard. So is there a way to connect an SSD to mainboard directly? And is there a place in the server to place the SSD anyway?
Thanx
PE T410 motherboard and processor compatibility
I've got a PE T410 currently configured with a OH19HD motherboard and a single E5503 processor. The AHCI setting of the embedded S100 controller shows devices as failing to initialize in BIOS. So there seems to be a board issue (all devices are functional on another PE T410 -- only difference other than processor/memory is PERC 6 v. H200 controller on the unit with issues). Also there is the occasional system has halted blue screen on 1 in 10 shutdowns (Server 2008R2 finishes its job but something happens as BIOS finishes its).
I'd like to add 2x X5670 Xeons and a new motherboard. I've seen 3 different boards out there -- W1N75, M638F, and a T410/Powervault NX300 Server Motherboard 3M84J 7T9Y4 N51GP. They all look visually the same and I can 't find any info other than they fit Gulf-town /Westmere processors 95watt or less according to the manual.
Can anyone verify if the above boards are compatible with the X 5670 xeons? Also is the 1366 heat sink bolt pattern standard on Dell boards to allow aftermarket sinks? Thinking about using two Prolimatech units (if they fit) and rigging up some fans.
The unit in question is still under warranty until Jun, so If I can get the warranty transferred, I'll swap it out, but I'd like to get a spare any way. I like spare parts:)
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

PowerEdge PE T100 CPU upgrade
Hi,
I have a PowerEdge T100 with a Xeon E3110 (Socket LGA775, 3Ghz, FSB 1333MHz). It has a TDP of 65W. I would like to upgrade to a Xeon X3370 which have a TDP of 95W.
According to the following link all Xeon 3000 sequence should be compatible with the T100 (www.dell.com/.../SLN293995).
The heatsink on that machine is pretty big and the cpu fan is very powerful. So can I expect that the upgrade from TDP 65W to 95W will be OK? Also, is it going to be a lot harder on the power supply?
Do you guys know if that processor is really compatible with the T100?
PowerEdge T20 with Xeon Processor Cannot install Operating System to add-in SATA Card Drives
I have been using my T20 for about a year now with just the 4 SATA drives (plugged into the motherboard) in a RAID 5 Array. I was using the Add-in SATA controller to run a DVD-ROM drive. Recently, I bought two solid state 2.5 inch drives and replaced the DVD-ROM drive. My intention was to install the operating system (Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard) onto the 2.5 drives in a RAID 1 Array from the controller. The Windows install recognizes the drives correctly, whether I try UEFI boot (Secure and Non-Secure) or Legacy BIOS, On-board SATA on or off, with drives (3.5 in) on or off. I uploaded the latest BIOS update A05. After installation the system fails to boot with either a missing file message or a message concerning a Signature Verification an possible tampering.
My questions are:
Is booting from the SATA card possible? If so what settings do I need to apply to make this happen?
If is not possible to boot from the SATA card? Is there a Dell recommended card to support 4 SATA drives, in RAID 1/10/5?
Thanks for any help
Poweredge T410 Single CPU Mixed RAM Modules
After reading Dell documentation and after much Googling on the subject, I am more confused than ever about RAM module configs in a single CPU server with modules of differing sizes.
I have 2 x 16GB modules and 2 x 4GB modules and want to know which slots they should be in. Does anyone have any experience with this server in this scenario?
Upgrading my PE T610
I have a PE T610 with single CPU socket (lowly E5606) and 2x4GB 1067Mhz dual ranked RDIMMS.
I've obtained some cheap 6x Hynix RDIMMS, with the following markings:
Hynix 4GB 2Rx4 PC3-10600R-9-10-E1 (HMT151R7TFR4C-H9 D7 AB).
I believe they are compatible with my system as they are dual ranked RDIMMS @ 1067Mhz. (and supposedly the memory works). Is there any way to actually test the memory without risking ones system or is the PE T610/CPU robust enough not to worry?
Are these RDIMMS actually compatible with the T610?
Can i add 2x or 4x Hynix RDIMMS to the existing memory for CPU 1, giving me a total of 16GB or 24GB (if the RDIMMS from different vendors can play nice) or is it better/recomended to remove the existing Dell RDIMMS and install the 4x or 6 Hynix RDIMMs?
Soon i plan on also purchasing a replecement CPU and heatsink, so can i install the CPU and the remainder of the Hynix memory to the B memory slots? Or is it bettwe to only have 16GB per CPU?
Whats the difference between advanced ECC and memory optimized and what is the real difference between the two (since the RDIMMS have ECC capabilities)?
The PE T610 is already loud enough but i want to be prepared for any noise shock. So how fast can i expect the fans to spin with one CPU and 4 or 6 RDIMMS, and later with 2x CPU and 8x RDIMMS?
How to flash perc 6i onboard controller in dellR710 ?
Hi All,
I mistakenly, clean flashed on board perc 6i controller in Dell R710 server.
I want to flash again the firmware on it. I checked the dell website, but there is only procedure about "how to upgrade". I want to completely flash back the 4mb file on the card, where can i get it ?
