T620 mixing 2Rx4 & 2Rx8 DIMMs

We have a PowerEdge T620 that came with 64GB ram, 8x 8GB 2Rx4 DIMMs

We want to upgrade to 128GB and have ordered 8 Kingston KTD-PE313E/8G DIMMs

The Kingston RAM is 2Rx8. The user manual says you can mix x4 and x8 DIMMs but I have not been able to get it to work getting error PST0129 Memory is detected, but is not configurable. Check memory devices.

The system works with either the new RAM or the old but not both

I have enabled Advanced ECC and have tried various combinations including separating the types between processors but to no avail.

Is it possible to mix 8 2Rx4 with 8 2Rx8 and if so which slots should I use?

Poweredge 840 Replacement Server Issues

I had a Poweredge 840 that I was pretty sure the motherboard went bad in.  I ordered a used 840 as a replacement.  I assumed that since it was sas I could just pull out the drives that came in the new server and replace them with my old drives.  On boot, I ran into all kinds of error messages.  I cant even remember what they all were and should have written them down.  Anyway, I thought that since I changed drives, maybe the sas controller was different (even though it looked idendtical), so I swapped out the sas controller.  When booting, I am back to amber lights and no POST.  This made me think that maybe the motherboard wasn't the problem at all in my old server and it was the sas controller instead.  So I put the sas controller that came in the new server back in, but continue to have amber lights and no POST.  The error indicators on the front panel jump all over the place.  Is this normal?

I have videoed these lights and can give you the order:

BCD

Then an two short tone beep.  No signal sent to monitor at all, it stays in sleep mode.

Todd

Network Access Stopped after reboot

Hello,

At present my windows server cannot access the network - all its 4 virtual nics are showing limited connective and no network access.

I have a brand new PowerEdge VRTX with a M520 server module inside - DHCP is on another piece of hw

At first the os booted and i had no issues downloading updates

I then set the 4 NICs to static ips and I also changed the IP address on the CMC to be static
these had appropriate ip addresses and the default gateway is set correctly. I also disabled IP version 6.

I notice on the M520 server that the NICS all show limited access and also unplugging the physical cable does not effect the status of the NICs. I have also tried changing one of the nics back to DHCP on the server but this did not resolve the issue.

I believe there is a level of hw abstraction here i need to configure - Can someone point me in the right direction?

W1228 ROB B Battery Warning

A PE 2950 was displaying a "W1228 ROMB battery < 24 hrs" warning message in amber on the lcd display. In the past when we saw the warning on other servers we replaced the ROM B battery and that resolved the issue. In this case though, it was taking a few days to move things off of the system so we could replace the battery. After 8 or 10 days the display returned to normal.

Does this indicate the battery has charged to a normal level and doesn't need to be replaced at this time or should we continue with the plan to replace it?

Internal Networking Issue with Windows 2012 R2 on Dell R710 + Hyper-V non UFEI

$

I have come across an odd one... I just rebuilt a Dell R710 with 4 Onboard Broadcom NICs and BIOS NON - UFEI Boot Mode.

I installed Windows 2012 R2 Standard GUI. No matter what types of configurations I have tried...I can not ping anything on the network other than the gateway. I have turned off the firewall, I have disabled all but the primary NIC. I have turned off the software firewall. I can' reach other servers on the network by \\hostname but not via IP Address ping. There is no ICMP restrictions in place. This is obviously causing issues reaching the soon to be retired Windows 2008 Server + Hyper-V that the host is actually Running Exchange 2003 (Yes this was supported but lots of problems so we are planning on building two guests on the new R710 for Exchange)

That part that has me stumped is if I rebuild the R710 in UFEI mode, the networking issue is no longer there, but instead VGA output can ever go beyond 640x480 no matter what driver/firmware edits are done. So UFEI resolves networking issue, gives me unusable and unchangeable video output. BIOS boot gives me functional video and unstable unusable networking :(

I have tried patched and unpatched OS, I have applied current firmware updates and all driver files are current. In 25+ years, I can say I am really stumped on this one! A simple rebuild has turned into a monster hair pulling nightmare.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance :)

T620 Lifecycle Controller Firmware Update bricked PSU???

$

We have a T620 with 2 identical 750watt PSUs as supplied with the server.

Today I have finally managed to do a well overdue Platform/firmware update but have ended up with only 1 functioning PSU.

The front panel LCD shows error:

PSU0006 Power supply 1 is incorrectly configured. Check PSU

The PSU in slot 1 has a flashing orange light

Within the Lifecycle controller firmware update, View Current Versions:

Power Supply.Slot.1 - Version 07.00.00

Power Supply.Slot.2 - Version 07.2B.7D

If I try Launch Firmware Update again I get the message:

Two PSUs of different wattages are installed in the system. They are greyed-out to prevent permanent damage upon simultaneous update. To update the firmware on the PSUs, either individually perform the updates or make sure that both PSUs are of the same wattage.

I am then unable to select either to update. In Launch Firmware Rollback i do not see an option to roll back the PSU firmware.

I saw the message on the 'Select Update Repository' screen warning 'If two PSUs of different wattages are installed, do not perform a simultaneous update' but as they are both 750w I didn't think there would be a problem.

Is there anything I can do to either rollback the PSU firmware or update them individuallly? Will this even help or is the PSU bricked?

R610 - fan at full speed, no POST

Hello all,

I have a poweredge r610 and I am having the following problem.  When I plug it in, one fan spins up to full speed (the fan all the way on the left).  The light on the power supplies are solid green.  The only other light that is illuminated is on the motherboard next to the nvram jumper.  It says "ds_paux_press".  Aside from that there are no other lights, and the system is completely unresponsive.

I've tried the following:

  • Swapping around PSUs
  • Swapping around memory
  • leaving it on to see if the problem goes away
  • leaving it unplugged for a while then trying it again.

I'm more experienced with desktop hardware, so any ideas are appreciated.  Thanks everyone!

How to configure 128Gb of RAM in an R610?

$

So we have an R610 and want to have it running with 128GB of memory.  We purchased 8 16GB sticks and installed them in numerical order so slots 1, 2, 3, and 4 are full and 5 and 6 are open:

[16] [16] [16] [open] [16] [open]  XX  XX  [open] [16] [open] [16] [16] [16]

When I boot it up I get stopped every time asking to press F1 to continue or F2 to go into setup.

Each side has the same amount of memory and each corresponding slot on either side is full or open.  How can I make this work with 128 Gigs of memory without getting stopped during every boot? Do I need to fill 1, 2, 4 and 5 and leave 3 and 6 open so each channel is full but then I have 1 channel empty?

Or can I just turn off the invalid memory check setting somewhere so it stops bugging me about it?

Hello

Have problems updating the firmware for the (AC) PSU for the R720, tried doing it from the lifecycle controller and by downloading and running the windows package from Win2008 R2.

After installing in both cases, the server powered down, but didn't wake up as advertisied (I waited overnight). Out of options I pressed the power button, and the firmware didn't upgrade.

I also tried plug in only 1 PSU, with the same result

Any help is appreciated, thanks for reading

Details about my config:

Old firmware version of PSU: 07.25.7D

Target firmware viersion: 07.25.7E

Hi All,

Is there any firmware updates available for  Dell Remote access Controller 5. Currently the installed firmware version is 1.65 (12.08.16).

I'm trying  to update the firmware version from 1.65 (12.08.16). After googling, received 1.65 A00 updated package; looks like the both packages are same.

Can you tell me , Is there any updated firmware package available for Dell Remote access Controller 5 ?

Thanks in Advance
