I have 2 servers build this way. I have purchased 4 each (16 total) 16GB DIMMs for these 2 servers thinking that I needed half of the 8 slots populated for them to operate.

After reading your posts to Utpal1, I take it that I should have purchased either 3 each or 6 each and re-used the 4GB DIMMS in the remaining slots. I want to get the most out of what I purchased. If I use 3 of the 4 16GB DIMMs in slots 1-3, can I mix the remaining single 16GB DIMM with 4GB DIMMs in slots 4-6?

Will this diminish the speed of the DIMMs if I mix them? I want to obtain the highest performance possible.

Thank you,

Paladin IT

Adaptec 2930LPE in R510 with Windows 2008 R2

Is anyone using this successfully with this server or another 11G server? We have one of these cards, which works fine in another (older) server, but when I attach this card in any of the PCI slots the system will crash as soon as Windows starts trying to install drivers for it. The adaptec site has drivers for this version of windows so it seems like it should work, but no joy so far. I haven't been able to figure out how to install the adaptec drivers either since the system crashes with the card installed and while trying to apply whatever default drivers Windows uses.

Any ideas?

Is there any rail compatibility between these systems?  I found part# J643G is compatible between the R610 and R710, but after that it doesn't seem like any cross.

Would appreciate any information out there.  Thanks.

Hi,

I encounter a small problem with a customer.

We have some Dell PowerEdge R710 and R720 servers used for ESXi Hypervisor, we use the iDRAC 7 for manage and monitor some parts of the server.

On three of them, we cannot access the iDRAC web interface, and i search a trick to reset the iDRAC.

We can to ping or access by SSH to the iDRAC ip address, but i cannot find the right SM-CLP command to reset only the iDRAC.

These servers is in production and we cannot shutdown them.

Thanks you for your return.

Best regards and sorry for my swiss english ;)

Trying to install an OS, no DVD drive. F11 to enter the boot menu does not bring up a USB option. Have tried USP drive in frontal USB ports, rear ports. Looked in the BIOS, USB drive emulation is on Auto.

Can the 1900 boot from USB?

PE R420 Slow Disk performance, vanishes only after power off

This have happened more than 2 case now

Hardware PE R420 with single CPU, enough RAM, RAID 1 with hotspare, Perc 310, Windows 2012 R2 with Hyper V enabled. about 2 - 3 Virtual Machines, VSS disk queue is disabled in the network adpater. Windows and Firmware is up to date.

User environment: about 10 users.

This was the configuration picked as the environment does not need anything intensive.

issue: Randomly, the system will behave very sluggishly anything disk related, opening up task manager, opening up a folder, virtual machine behaviors.

i will restart the physical server, with a clean reboot and no virtual machines running, anything disk related, opening up a zip file, pull up services.msc, will be very slow, takes about 10 - 15 seconds to pop up.

idrac shows everything is clean, vd and raid is healthy.

this only goes away when you power the server off and cold power start it. since restart does not help, it is leading to think it is a firmware / hardware issue.

edit: CPU <3%, ram only used about 500MB, disk activity <1MB /sec, basically everything in resource monitor is flat.

any suggestions will be appreciated.

Dell T320 Warranty Transfer IMPOSSIBLE WITH DELL, Not knowing previous owner info

$

I know this might be talked about with laptops, monitors and the like but I recently purchased a used T320 off ebay from a reputable pawnshop. The problem is this beautiful beast has warranty  until 2017 but dell will not honor the warranty until I can properly identify the previous owner. I have explained that I purchased from a pawnshop with the invoice and service tag clearly visible through ebay. They have no identifiable information from the previous person and now I might be stuck with a $700 machine just in case it ever breaks down. Before you go and say oh why did you buy used bla bla or Thats what you get for buying online. Yes I know these issues sometimes arise but I work in IT and trying to further my knowledge while maintaining 2 jobs with a recent set of twins and all of this while supporting my family all with my income. Total of us is 5 so the fact that I needed to buy this thing used was because I could afford this and what I am trying to learn. I hope someone from dell can make an exception to my particular instance because I have the proof that I myself have purchased this and the store can vouch that I indeed purchase this. No funny business trying to go on.

I also tried to register with my name and also use the correct dell transfer of warranty link but was denied.

PowerEdge T710 - UEFI Boot hangs with external drive plugged in

I am having an issue with a T710 set for UEFI. If I have the external drive plugged in when doing a reboot, it will hang at 'Initializing UEFI Please wait...' for who knows how long. I never wait it out. I unplug the drive and it boots nearly instantly after that.

I am guessing there is a setting in there somewhere to skip the external drive, but if I boot without the drive plugged in, I don't see any option like that in UEFI boot settings.

How can I get this fixed up?

E1000 Error

Hello all,

I added a second cpu to my T610 and now I get the E1000 error. the CPU is X5650 I have 2X 16gb ram in the correct slots for each processor. If I remove one processor the system boots correctly, I have tried both processors as a single cpu setup and all is well. The processors are a matched set. This server has been operating fine for the last few months with the single CPU. As a side note I did have a issue about a month ago where when I came in one morning both power supplies had failed one would not display any light at all and the other just had the amber light. I replaced both and it has run fine since until the upgrade to 2 cpu's . Could this be caused by the power distribution board?

Thanks

Bruce

Update Service Tag on a T320 Server

We had to replace a system board in a T320 server.  The damage on it was not covered under warranty.  The problem is, we are unable to set the service tag back to the tag on the original system board.

I have tried all the old utilities and none of them are capable of updating the service tag.

Does anyone know how to update service tag on these newer Dell servers?

I have been trying for days to update all the FW's on my R710 without success.  I have tried using ftp.dell.com, and using the SUU DVD's but nothing works.  The furthest i got is it attempted to update the FW but said it wasn't certified.  Every other time I tell the USC to use DVD it just stays at please wait.

Can anyone help.

Thanks

I need some help as I havent been able to get anywhere with the information I have, basically we purchased a used Poweredge 1920W UPS & a new Management Card for it and we wish to be able to use the Dell UPS management software to shutdown my 3x R710;s & 1x R610.  But I have the Management card working and I can access it via the WEB GUI and also I have installed the Dell UPS Management Software on my servers but the software does not seem to be able to see the UPS.

Should I be able to see the UPS in the software?  Ive never used it before so I dont know, so any help would be appreciated.

Upgrading HDs on T310...

$

I've got a T310, running SBS 2008 currently with 4 HDs, 2 160s mirrored (20GB free) & 2 250s mirrored (30GB free). I'm planning on replacing the 160s with 500s & the 250s with 1TB drives. I've got good backups & since I'm not in a disaster recovery type situation, what would be the best way to do this? I'm assuming I've got to do one array at a time, or do I, since I'm basically restoring everything to the same locations, just to larger drives. I'm using Seagate 1.5 TB expansion drives as my backups & a full backup takes about 4 hours, so any idea of how long the restore should take? Not in a rush, just trying to prepare users for down time.

Any advice appreciated!

PowerEdge 720 LifeCycle + UEFI Question

$

Hi All,

Hoping someone can shed some light. It's been a while sine I've had to do a baremetal install on a server and got a few questions. Just got a new PowerEdge R720 server with iDRAC7 Enterprise. Wanted to use the UEFI functions so using the Lifecycle Controller I selected the option to deploy the OS (Win Server 2012 R2)

I select the correct OS and then selected UEFI boot. Rebooted the machine and booted from the DVD when prompted. I get presented with the 3 partitions (System Recovery, OS and unallocated). The unallocated partition is the virtual disk being presented by the RAID controller. The problem being is that it is formatted to use MBR rather than GPT. Is this how all dell servers ship by default? I had to tell Windows to go into recovery mode and got into a cmd prompt and ran DISKPART to convert the partition in to GPT. Then I rebooted and went through the lifecycle process again and rebooted again to boot from the DVD. I now only have 1 partition (the virtual disk) and windows installed fine. To summarize after my wall of text....

1. Whats the disadvantage of doing the above i.e losing the system recovery partition etc

2. Do all Dell servers ship with the partition set as MBR by default? Why wasn't the system intelligent enough to change the type to GPT when I selected UEFI mode in Lifecycle Controller?

3. Is there any advantage to using UEFI mode. I thought the whole idea of UEFI was to provide better integration between the OS and the firmware. If using the BIOS mode offered this...whats the point of using the lifecycle controller in the first place.

I hope that made sense :)

Any answers greatly appreciated.

Using my server as a desktop also when running ESXi 5.x?

$

These days I’m looking to get rid of my desktop pc tower and just go and build a custom server. Problem with that is the “experts” I’ve spoken too don’t really know how to answer my question. So, I was thinking that hopefully, maybe by chance, posting my question in this forum would help me get an answer!

My server configuration would be something like this:
- Supports 2x Intel Xeon V3 CPU’s.
- Supports least 30TB of SATA/SAS hot-swap 3.5” hard drive space that holds at least 4 HD’s.
- Supports at least 1TB of RAM (4GB/8GB/16GB/32GB/64GB).
- Have at least 1 PCIx x16 slot.
- Have at least 2 PCIx x8 or x4 slots.
- Be a 1U or 2U server case.
- PSU around 700-1000w.
- Have room for a slim (laptop style) Blu-ray burner drive.

Now here comes the question that has stumped many:

Since I am doing away with my desktop, I will need the server to act as a desktop replacement. However, I am needing the server to run the following:
- At least 4 x 2012 R2 OS VM servers.
- Each VM running 2-4GB RAM.
- Each VM using on-board graphics.
- Each VM sharing the (if 4 HD slot’s) 3 HD’s or sharing 7 HD’s if housing 8 HD slot’s. (The last HD in both scenarios would be for the desktop).
- All VM’s running ESXi 5.x.

Now since i'm wanting it to also act as a desktop I need to be able to use it as if I was a desktop. The question that’s stumping everyone is how can I do this when the server will be running ESXi for its base OS? How can I use the PCIx 16x graphics card for just my “desktop” version? If this is possible, will there be any lag from the server to my monitor via HDMI? I know I will need to run an HDMI and USB cable from the server room to the room where my desktop used to be – that’s no problem.

My “desktop” would be running Windows 8.1 x64 Pro with some type of 1/2GB GeForce Graphics card that supports HDMI 2.0 and somewhere around 16GB of RAM. I’m not a big gamer – I mainly just do web design and desktop programming. I’ve been looking at the Dell PowerEdge R730 Rack Server and it seems like a good fit for what I am wanting to do. However, not knowing if I can do what I am asking in this email to you is the only reason stopping me from getting it.

Thank you for taking the time to read this,

David G.
