Hey there everyone. I have spent roughly 3 days looking for answers to my questions and have yet to really find anything concrete, so I will just lay it all out on the line here and see what the actual dell community can manage to tell me :-) multiple questions here, so please bear with me.
I am making my first foray into large volume storage (corporate backup server) and as such have a few very specific questions. A little about the machine I want to buy;
Dell R510
H700 raid controller
filled to the brim with 3tb drives
in two of the PCI slots I want to add an eSata card and a USB 3.0 card (dell links below)
I will be using Ubuntu Server as the operating system.
OK, so, my first question is can I fill this with 3TB drives? I read that the Raid controller will support it, but I want to make sure that nothing else is going to prevent them from working. Can I boot ubuntu server 11.10 from 3TB volumes? I have heard conflicting answers on this and was hoping someone with experience in this could answer. If I can't do that I can sub two of the drives for 500gb without a problem i suppose.
The other glaring quesions are the PCI cards. will the USB 3.0 card and the eSATA card be supported? I need to have AT LEAST the eSATA for hooking up to a Drobo. The USB 3.0 would be nice as I will occaisionally have to seed 60GB at a time from USB key and doing it over 3.0 instead of 2.0 would be preferable.
So...those are my questions. I understand that this was kind of in depth, and I thank you for reading it.
Thank you very much,
Jim Hough
