I am about to build up a storage server which host freenas (probably Solaris). It will sit in a small home office, thus high noise level is definitely a deal breaker for us.
Initially I was looking into the T630 since tower server normally has lower noise level. It has 18 3.5 HDD bay which seems a suitable choice.
Then I started to do some research and found this post
en.community.dell.com/.../19647301
which is related to my question regarding the noise level.
In the document Daniel provided in the post, it says the T630 will have higher noise level in a non-raid configuration because iDRAC cannot detect the temperature of the HDDs. However, unfortunately we intend to use the server in non-raid mode. I am wondering to what extend will it be louder? It looks to me that the fan will constantly rotate at a high speed.
From another aspect, the document only state that the non-raid configuration factor will increase the noise level under T630 but not other machines. Does this issue only affect T630, or is it a wide spread issue with iDRAC and the writer just forget to mention that?
I am wondering anyone own T630 or from Dell, could you please do me a favor to do some tests by using the non-raid configuration? Thanks in advance.
BTW if you guys thinks I am going along the wrong way for picking this server, please let me know. A rack-mounted server will be great because of the small footprint. All recommendations are welcome. Thank you.
