I'd like to add a real video card to my PowerEdge 2900, but all available choices (both ATi and nVidia) are PCIe x16. People are saying, the x16 cards can be installed into PCIe x8 — they will work at the x8 speed, but will otherwise be perfectly functional... The additional contacts of the x16 will simply be "hanging" in the air...
Unfortunately, in case of PowerEdge, this is not easy, because of how the slots are made... People talk about simply cutting one slot's back, but I'd rather avoid that... There are x8-to-x16 "converters" available — can anyone share their experience with using one? Did it fit? Is the card working nicely?
