I have a PowerEdge T610 currently with a single processor - an Intel Xeon E5603 1.6GHz, 4.8 GT/s, 4MB cache.
I would like to upgrade the memory in this server, but it is currently configured with 6x4GB DIMMs so the single processor capacity (in terms of slots) is maxed out.
I believe I could simply replace some all of the existing DIMMs with higher capacity ones, but I'm wondering whether this is the 'best' course of action or should I consider a second processor?
If I wanted to use the other 6 memory slots, I would have to add a second processor and make sure the A and B slots are matched (ie same number and configuration of DIMMs).
My specific questions:
- The processor I have is not listed as an upgrade part on the Dell website. Can I mix and match processors? I think they both need to be in the 56xx series so could I add a 5620 to the existing 5603, even though they'll be different speeds and cache?
- What else do I need? (The processor info page says a heat sink needs to be ordered but there doesn't appear to be a specific heat sink for the T610 listed on the site.)
- Do DIMMS need to be installed in 3s? For example, could each bank have 4 DIMMS? Or 2? Or 5?
Thanks in advance.
