Good evening,
I have a "new to me" R710 in my home lab. It's one of those great used ones from eBay.
It has 2x E5520 Xeons and 18x8GB DIMMs, DRAC6 Express, PERC6/i (no local storage other than a thumb drive).
The DRAC firmware is 1.98 - this appears to be the latest available.
The BIOS version is 6.4.0.
Upon booting the system, it just hangs. I don't even get the option to press F2/F10/F11/F12. I have attached a cell phone shot of the screen it hangs at (I call it the splash screen, not sure if it has an official name - is this before, during or after POST?). Even at this screen, the DRAC is responsive. It shows no errors on the webUI. The LCD screen also shows no errors.
Here is a list of all of the things I have tried:
1) Updating the DRAC firmware - this did not help. It was already 1.98, but I thought there may be an issue with corruption, so I went ahead and tried this.
2) Pulled all hardware EXCEPT for: CPU1, DIMM A1 - this did not help. I tried different DIMMs and the 2nd CPU from CPU2, but it still hung.
3) Pulled both power supplies and swapped them with known good ones - no change in behavior
4) Tried just one power supply - LCD properly complained about lost redundancy, but no boot
5) Just let it sit at this screen - I have tried intervals of 30 and 75 minutes, but it just sits there
6) Clearing NVRAM - the manual says to let the system "boot" to complete this. Since I never get a full boot though, I let it get to the splash screen, let it sit for about 15 minutes, then placed the jumper back to standard position.
While it's stuck on this screen, the keyboard is non-responsive. Numlock won't turn on, Ctrl+Alt+Del does nothing.
However, I can access the DRAC via web browsers. On there, it reports no errors. All voltages, fans, power supplies etc. all report with a green check mark, and the numerical values are in-line with normal. The Post Code it shows it:
0x40 | Display sign-on |
So, at this point, I'm very very stuck. I'm hoping the Dell community can give me an idea of something I haven't already tried. I assume the seller will help since this is effectively DOA, but the hassle of shipping this back and a new one out to me is not something I look forward to at all...
