Hello newbie here. I am a small business owner (pet store) and the small business is yet paying the bills and I have to work full-time, so funds are low.
Here is my system that I got about a year ago and it is excellent condition. I know the cons of power consumption and age, but my full-time job has the same PowerEdge 2900 and it used every day and no problems, but I did not know this until I had gotten mine, so it was a coincidence.
After all of the cons, the pros to me outweigh the cons, there are plenty parts all over ebay to keep it running.
Since the server is currently not installed, I can make upgrades
Here is the system, as is:
Dual 2.5 ghz Intel Xeon Quad Core Processors
- 4 x 1 Gb Ram
- 3 x 146 Gb SSCI 15,000 Rpm High Performance Hard Drives
- 2 x 73 GB SSCI 15,000 Rpm High Performance Hard Drives
Win 2003
I was looking at adding the following:
1. a IBM Ultrium LTO-4 800GB/16.TB SAS Tape (internal) or a Tandberg LTO-4 HH - Tape drive LTO Ultrium ( 800 GB / 1.6 TB ) 4 SCSI external
(Would you get the external or the internal drive - I have always felt that the tape backups were the most reliable?)
2. WD2003FYPS WD 2TB 7.2K 64MB or 1TB SATA 3.5" HARD DRIVE
(Would you get the 1 or 2TB drive? Do I have to buy two drives at a time of just one?)
3. On the forum, I read about adding an additional Dual 2.5 ghz Intel Xeon Quad Core Processor
(is this necessary. would you add the addiitional and can you add the additional or was this a false read? If possible would you upgrade processor(s))
Also, forgot:
4. Would you upgrage the memory from 4GB to 8, 16 or 32? Pricing is reasonable on ebay for pulled components?/
I welcome any additional comments that would help me, that I may not realize that I should have asked.
I do thank you all in advance for your time and help.
