Hello everyone, this is my first post here.
Anyway, I have a triplet of these DELL FS12-NV7's and I fully understand they are not solely DELL made and sold, so just to clear that up.
They are however quite good quality as you would expect from a DELL product, I can and am able to use drivers from similar models and well.. I'm happy with them.
One thing I would like to do that is not quite non-standard is this, and quite simply put it is the PCI x16 slot, even though I have not had the complete cover off I am in full knowledge that the DELL PERC 6/i cards are filling up the space to put any more cards in.
I would like to pose the idea of removing the metalwork, and the (two slot?) riser card.. installing a 3 slot riser card.. and running both the PREC 6/i cards along with an infiniband card.
I have found 2U 3 slot riser cards, from images of the loaded up motherboards it does very much seem to me the two PERC 6/i card could be placed on the two lower slots and the Infiniband right on the top, it could well be a very tight squeeze. I've even thought of buying two ribbon cable type PCI extenders and even moving the PERC 6/i cards out the way altogether and toward the front of the case.
How else could I add-in Infiniband to these machines? is their another type of card similar to that used in IBM HS21? Blades that attaches directly to a port on the motherboard? Mezzanine card??
I would be very helpful if someone could have a chat with me about solving this issue, I know I'm not alone I don't mind trying a few things out, displaying images within the next few weeks and either proving it can be done or not.. At least we all know and no-one else smokes a motherboard eh!
hehh
So please, comment with ideas, worries, thoughts even.. it's good to share! :)
