I recently got my hands on a really neat dell r410 (for 220$), Ive done some research regarding this system's noise.
The server's configuration is as follows: (Or if you want the service tag.. <Removed>):
Single Xeon E5507 Quad
4X4GB Ram
4x Seagate EDIT*Cheetah 15.7K 450GB Drives HotSwap
Dell PERC 6/i Pci-express (The top slot, not the modular daughtercard).
Dual 500W PSU's
It appears that people upgraded the BMC Firmware and the server became "whisper" quiet.
Now, I own a dell R210-II that sits 2 feet from my desk and its what i can only drescribe as "check the lights to verify its running" quiet. Dell did an amazing job with this baby server.
When im powering up the r410 it seems that it settles its fans at around 8K RPM and FAN #4 at 12K.
I upgraded to the latest iDrac Firmware 1.97 and there seems to be no effect on the fan speeds.
When i try to upgrade the BMC using the windows installation file from dell's website it just halts the install saying that "your operating system is incompatible with this software". Its Windows Server 2012R2 Datacenter.
There has to be a way to quiet it down, Firmware editing maybe?
What did i miss?
