DELL Poweredge R410 VD multiple failure + Qs

Hi Guys,

We support a client that has a DELL PowerEdge R410 server with 2 x VD; a 500GB RAID1 and 1T RAID1. In both VDs the RAID is degraded and a disk has failed in each (so a 500GB has failed, and a 1T has failed).

500GB - WDC WD5002ABYS-18B1B0 (7200k SATA Enterprise)
1T - WDC WD10EALX-009BA0 (7200k SATA - suitable for consumer RAID only)

We need to replace these fast. The idea is to replace failed disk and rebuild raid, then remove original working disk and rebuild again so we replace all disks in the server. Additional concern is the 2nd VD that is used for data - looks like it is running on disks not suitable for business-grade RAID.

Server has a DELL SAS 6/iR inside.

Q1: Anyway we can replace with SAS disks? Want to replace the SATA with SAS 15k - what is the easiest method of achieving this, or should we stick to SATA 7200k's. This server is in production and want minimal risk and downtime.

Q2: What does all disks must be either Dell-compliant SAS or SATA physical disks mean? If sticking with SATA will any Enterprise SATA disks suffice?

Huge thanks,
Jason/Gooroo
