I had two 6800s running ESXi just fine. I acquired two more 6800s and they have the older Cranford processors. I bought 8 of the same CPUs as are in my other 6800s. I upgraded the CPUs in teh first machine and I get an E1000 misconfiguration error and will not boot.
I asked support if those particular 6800s supported the 7100 Tulsa series of processors and they said:

Hi Mike,
Yes, PowerEdge 6800s XXXX and XXXX are comaptible with Xeon 7100 (Tulsa) processors.
Feel free to reply for further concerns. Thank you and have a nice day!

Okay, so support confirmed that those boxes will support the CPUs I'm putting into them. I did upgrade the firmware before attempting this. What else could be going on here?
